We just need to think up good titles for the levels of skill of staff with different types of training.

Animal Care Assistant is fine for those qualified.

More contentious would be Nursing Assistant or Nursing Auxiliary (as far as I am aware Nursing Assistant is OK for human care). Veterinary Technician is far too American for my liking. Theatre Assistant for those with surgery experience?

Or just protect Registered Veterinary Nurse?

It was not that long ago that we had State Registered Nurses and State Enrolled Nurses

Some of those now most vociferous about limiting the title nurse to VNs were exactly the same people who, 30 years ago were breaking the law by calling RANAs "nurses" although (at that time the title nurse was a protected one - reserved for qualified human nurses.

Well, to be fair, I think you should be mindful of:

it is aimed at the general public, which a) is made up of people with a wider range of, er, intellectual capacity, b) could generally be said to be less highly educated than the learned members of this site.
You may think that the animation/voiceover is at a simple level that seems a bit patronising. But there is a need for clarity with these things, and whatever else, I do think it achieves that.
Reaction so far (OK n=2) on vetnurse.co.uk has been very positive indeed.

These sorts of things are always subjective, and when presented with something like this in a forum, people invariably rush to critqique/criticise rather than look for any positive points. For my part, I think the video contains a clear message which I think it is nice to see the RCVS promoting. It may not be as gripping as an episode of Breaking Bad, but that's not really the point.

The animation starts at the level of a confident six year old then introduces wording that we understand but the general public are unlikely to have much of a clue. How many are going to know or care what a postnominal is?

It really is very badly scripted IMO. Professionals will understand it but the average pet owner is going to be out of their depth (or bored) as the animation goes on.

Slagging off the many highly skilled but unqualified people in practice may keep the more vociferous RVN's happy but I have known a number of qualified nurses that I would be reluctant to let near my pets without constant supervision.

We have a Veterinary Care Assistant (trained with the College of Animal Welfare) and I would trust her completely. She is qualified but not an RVN. The course was very impressive and covered most of the skills required by a nurse in practice but without the bullsh*t.

I don't think the message is clear at all. A good idea, badly implemented IMO!

It's not so much the patronising script, it's the voice and delivery that is totally ucky.

Not so sure the mesaage would be clear to the six-year-old intelligence at which it is aimed (as has already been pointed out).

And if I understand the message aright, it's not nice, it's nasty, to see Belgravia House promoting it .

Who paid for it? Is it how those who paid for it and employ those it is promoting want the nurses to be portrayed? Our nurses don't just nurse.....they've asked for more

This is RCVS' view of nursing and that's peculiar.

What an arrogant statement. How many veterinary professions are there? I'm only aware of one in the UK.

Is there evidence that such a vast majority of veterinary surgeons support this move that such a sweeping statement is justified?

My unqualified 'nurses' that I have trained in-house could take on most RVNs and beat them, and they could give a large number of vets a run for their money. They deserve to be called nurses and I do.

I hate it, head nurse (RVN) loathes it, animal care assistant (taken course and passed exams!) finds it demeaning. Good receptionists (do some clinical work) find it deeply insulting.

Has everyone seen the dreadful animated campaign ad for vetrinary nurses or was it vitrinary nurses? Starts off talking to six year olds but not many of this age know what a postnominal is! At least she could say veterinary by the end of the ad.

General opinion from RVN's and other here is that it is pretty grim. There is a clear suggestion that non-registered staff members are potentially going to compromise animal welfare!

Very poor effort IMO.

Quite appropriate to encourage high standards and I don't have any issue with protecting the term veterinary nurse.
