Thanks all. Just posted so fingers crossed. Not had much joy in the last 2 years so here's hoping :)

Just to add, tried advertising in the local paper before and got inundated but sadly not with good applicants.

I have just had another nurse apply from the advert on the Vetnurse website. Probably the time of year but a better response than previous Vet-Times adverts. Much cheaper too!

Through other connections we are also building a small network of locally based VNs who are able to do the odd shift to help with holiday cover etc so, as Martin says, there are lurkers out there too!

Hopefully our new mapping feature will work well in this situation. Now, when you put an advert on vetnurse, it places a google map of your practice location on the advert, and when people search, they can enter their own postcode and it reorders the job list by distance from their front door.

I advertise in the local paper and it is surprising how how many qualified VNs or experienced ANA's are lurking out there waiting for an opportunity at a local practice and don't bother replying to national ads because they don't want to/can't move.

Personally I've given up employing experienced nurses, I just train them myself and if you get the right person they are brilliant.

Well, I've just thrown everything, including the kitchen sink, at our job advertising section on vetnurse (coming soon to vetsurgeon). So this:

We've added an awful lot of new functionality (whilst at the same time keeping it simple and intuitive) to make your adverts appear in front of the right person. And there is some stuff going on behind the scenes which will improve your job advert visibility yet further. Hopefully, it'll save you all a bob or two in advertising costs.

I have heard of a fabulous website called vetnurse.co.uk as well....

Actually I have been looking for a nurse for 7 months. I advertised in Vet Times and enlisted locum agencies. The best two candidates appeared about a week ago, came within a week of each other and both from free advertising. One from vetnurse and one via word of mouth.
