But it turned out not to be a stray ...

This is definitely one of the downsides of having a Facebook account for your practice without keeping a 24 hours close eye on it. The comments are all one sided and very damning. The owners of the practice need to take action rapidly.

Re: Veterinary PR disaster

Seems to have happened again

I would quite welcome this as it seems tough that so many practices work incredibly hard to maintain standards but a few are a disgrace.

Should cats and dogs be vaccinated on a table set up in a pet shop for a couple of hours? No security if a cat gets fractious and I would almost guarantee little or no facilities or experience should there be an acute anaphylactic problem.

VMD told us off for not having a written protocol for the CD register. It was on the inside cover of the register. That said we did find the visit useful and informative overall.

As long as an inspector appreciates the realities of practice on a busy day then I am not sure why this should be a problem.
We had someone ranting and raving at us yesterday. Stray dog came in 10 minutes before closing. Chip scanned and owner phoned. Not very bright owner. Asked if they could come straight down as we closed in 10 minutes. Said they couldn't get there for at least 20. We were still sorting hospital patients so said 20 minutes would be fine.

30 minutes later they still hadn't arrived, and the vet on call (we had diverted the phone to the after hours vet) copped an abusive phone call from the owner because apparently if they didn't pick up the dog within 20 minutes we were going to euthanase it. Not quite sure where they got that impression from but i'm just waiting for the facebook feedback to start.......
Sometimes clients (maybe the not so bright ones) seem to take their preconceptions or worries about what might happen in a situation and somehow mix them up with their memories about what actually was said or happened in a situation.

I had a complaint last year that included the client saying that when I put their dog to sleep people in the waiting room could see the dead dog through the consult room door when the clients were leaving the room. Luckily I had already recorded (before I heard about this complaint) that the owner had requested I move the dog to the next room (PDSA so double rooms) before they left (which I did) because they were worried about people seeing the dog when they left. There was a lot of guilt felt by the owner in this case and she had "issues". I couldn't understand how she had apparently remembered a different set of events to what actually happened and she seemed to be complaining about all the things she had a fear about happening rather than what actually did.

I think the important point when putting apparent strays to sleep is to only do so immeadietly if it is the only kind option. Surely the threshold for putting a stray to sleep lies a lot lower than for a pet cat. I

just hope if my cats where ever brought to a vet by a neighbour when they are old and frail (and the MC fails for some reason) they try a bit longer than one afternoon to find me/give me a chance to start calling (and put it on a drip if nescessary in the meantime). I also think the person who brings it in has some responsibilities too. Frankly a cat is somebody elses property, and reasonable attempts have to be made to find the owner to let them decide.

RSPCA guidelines have changed now so that if the MOP has dropped the animal in BEFORE contacting the RSPCA, they won't give ANY funding to treatment.

From their guidelines:

What is the RSPCA policy of ‘prior knowledge’?
The RSPCA policy of ‘prior knowledge’ requires that all incidents are reported to the RSPCA Helpline and authorisation for IET obtained by the finder BEFORE attending a veterinary surgery. Not going to happen though 😒

Re: Veterinary PR disaster

I think this is a bit cynical Martin. Whatever your feelings on PAH and corporates in general, any one of us could have been in this situation. We seem to be increasingly under attack from the public and the media. We need to stick together.
Maybe you didn't read this line: "I feel sorry for the individual vet". Maybe I should have added a smiley. Maybe you feel the same about corporates but don't like to admit it.
I have no strong feelings on corporates one way or the other. I have locummed for several, most have been good, some not so good. But I wouldn't derive any satisfaction from seeing them getting this sort of treatment from the press or public. Completely different from the Medivet saga.

It might persuade people to get their cats chipped too, which is no bad thing.

Now even the public can't accept the evidence of their eyes without some sort of test....!!

Actually a photo of the patient might be a good idea too so that the state of the animal is obvious.

Re: Veterinary PR disaster
I think this is a bit cynical Martin. Whatever your feelings on PAH and corporates in general, any one of us could have been in this situation.
