Not less than 30 years. Bummer! I thought that at 23 years I qualified for the title. Have I really still got seven more years to go?

Not only that, but apparently I'm a novice on this forum as well. I haven't felt this young for years.

And a dinovet for me is someone who refuses to learn because "we always did it like that and it worked".... I am convinced that not everything we get told on CPD Courses nowadays will hold up as long as I will practice though. But I listen and take it in and if someone proves to me what we did in the past is rubbish I'll not use it any more. On the other hand I always have to chuckle on how much technology some younger vets needs to come to a diagnosis when fingers and eyes alone often are all needed (constipated cat, blocked cat for example, palpable abdominal tumor). Nothing wrong with doing further dx to agree on a treatment plan of course. Does that qualify me as a dinovet?

Re: What makes you a dinovet?

Hear hear Mariette.

I quite pride myself in being a dinovet.

I have over 40 years of experience and never stopped reading, learning studying, did an MSc with distinction aged 57 and am currently studying for a certificate.

I like evidence based stuff, BUT, most veterinary evidence is flimsy based on very small numbers. It is not a relogion, it adds to the tool and trick box!!

I am sceptical about the religious fashions of (some of) the young vets, especially with the absolutism of rules.

Yes the use of steroids, yes the use of megestrol. I know that |I have served animal welfare enormously with some ovarid or some steroids, not out of laziness but out of using what works in a desperate animal which i will not leave to suffer until I have found the diagnosis.

Yes the exploratory laparotomy as a quick and good an relatively harmless way of finding out instead of endless expensive tests with indirect results.

And yes I am passionate about good careful clinical diagnosis and treating the animal, not the lab results.

And maybe too: treatment and cure is more important than the diagnosis. For us the diagnosis is interesting and fun to try to find. For owner and animal it is the cure that counts. (And that is me saying it having worked in countries where diagnosis was extremely important because it might be rabies or foot and mouth or anthrax or you had to absolutely know if the neurological symptoms were caused by babesia or cowdria since the treatment was totally different for either.

And to be honest, I think even 19th century vets would be able to contribute interesting experience to a forum like this, it is silly to exclude people with a wealth of experience even though they might not follow the fashion or evidence of the day!

Our profession thrives on an open mind and sharing of experiences and opinions.

nuff said

To me it says a vet who retired years ago, never kept up with stuff when they were in practice let alone now. Has never heard of the term 'CPD', yet still feels they can make useful contributions to an internet forum.
See how the great ear plucking controversy is turning around, for example, keeps me

Oh, and megestrol

And you've forgotten the great "thyroxin is toxic" evidence too

Fortunately this dinovet actually reads papers and "keeps up with stuff" and doesn't just quote the title.

And the fact I'm still here and still

Having put in an RCVS complaint against a college who uses homeopathy and even more bizarre forms of non-treatment, I have been called a dinosaur (amongst many other and significantly worse personal insults) because I believe in evidence based medicine and not 'energy medicine' and other similar 'modalities' used over many centuries... etc etc...
On the other hand, I am getting on a bit, so maybe he's just being polite...

Re: What makes you a dinovet?

PS

Re: What makes you a dinovet?

Age is clearly the major but not only factor, there are some younger vets who think that they learned all they need to know for the rest of their career at university.

It is the refusal or inability to evolve and keep up to date and accept progress, sticking with the frame of mind of: 'if it ain't broke then don't fix it' when if you're honest it never worked well to start with or you never looked for an alternative.

It is also borne from laziness or lack of understanding typified by when a shot of steroids supersedes the necessity to make a correct diagnosis.

Essentially it is a state of mind. I've promised myself that the day I don't want to keep learning and trying new methods of practice is the day I should retire - before I become extinct.

Re: What makes you a dinovet?
Anyone want to jump in here ?
