We have a panic button in the practice that's linked to a private security firm. If it's pushed, we reckon it'll take them about 15 mins to get to us. The question is do we have an audible alarm or have it silent? I reckon silent as if the

Re: Panic button
...in an area where sub-human primates have established a population!
Well pretty much anywhere then!

Re: Panic button

Most alarm system installations will come with a panic button included in the price. Fairly standard really. I think best have one in a very obvious place especially if the practice is isolated or in an area where sub-human primates have established a population!

Silent alarms are more for banks that want to catch criminals. most of us just want them to go away and leave us undamaged!

Some form of electronic entry seems sensible especially if anyone works alone.

Re: Panic button

We have never had any form of panic button but are hoping to extend /rearrange the building and have to rewire the alarm system . In this day and age would it be wrong of me not to fit a panic alarm ? We have good neighbours and on the one occasion it went off (faulty sensor), they were round in seconds. Nice feeling!

Re: Panic button

Ours has 3 panic buttons: one for, police, one for fire and one for 'the doctor' - yes doctor not ambulance so I don't think that would be a lot of use. However I don't honestly know if it sets the alarm off or not but as the others agree, the more noise the better it will attract attention and disorientate/panic any would-be attacker. We also have a system that sends an alarm if someone puts in a pre-determined code it they are being forced to disarm the system under duress. This I know is silent.

We have a similar system at home and I unknowingly set it off so was rather surprised when two police armed response teams turned up 5 minutes later and swarmed all over the house automatic rifles in hand like the SWAT team. When I enquired why there had been such a disproportionate response they said they were on a training exercise nearby so thought they might as well make it realistic!

This compares to when my daughter was being harassed late at night when she was on her own by a man at the local station who told her he had just been released from prison for murdering someone else who looked just like her. She surreptitiously called the police from her phone and sensibly kept him talking for 20 minutes before they turned up then arrested the wrong man when he ran away!! They finally got the right man and one policeman brought daughter home while the other detained the culprit at the station. There was a sudden flurry of activity when the bobby who brought said daughter back got a call from his colleague that the baddie had escaped his grasp and tried to jump in front of a train. However the first I knew of all this was just before the police arrived, the baddie had apparently snatched Emily's phone and run off with it and called me to say he had my daughter and if I wanted to see her alive again he wanted me to bring £500 - not the happiest few minutes of my life I can tell you. I did afterwards think that she was worth rather more than that!

You couldn't make it up.

If you don't I think you may have a court case even if a staff member is just frightened by a potential intruder.

And an entry system so someone can't just walk in.

Make sure it is reachable and not with a key in it which gets lost.

Not to a control centre unless it has an loud audible alarm concurrently.

"Vets" equals drugs these days.

There is no 100 % security, but most offenders will hike off once they realize any kind of security/ member of the public might arrive soon. Have the alarm ring outside as well as inside, the phone thing is a very good idea too. What happens if a complete nutter decides to attack nobody can predict, but most people have some kind of sense left (burglars/robbers/rapists), so I'd rather go with putting these off than the unlikely event of someone completely out of their mind treading over your doorstep.

Re: Panic button

Wot Michael said.

Lots of very loud noise.

Have a Dog-Stop alarm handy. I defy anybody to pursue their evil plans with that in their ear.

Can you set the phones up so that you can call 999 with the push of a single button? The great thing is that the 999 control room, who can trace the call instantly, can then hear everything that's going on even if you have to move away from the phone. I don't know about your locality, but round our way the police love responding to this sort of thing. It worked for us.

Does the alarm sound externally? Are there neighbours who may be alerted? Can you get a dialler to text the partners?
