Please don't despair . My son was, in his own words now, ' a nightmare ' at 15. (he is nearly 20 now ). Recently he told me of a quote by I think Mark Twain which goes something like this :

When I was 14 I thought my father was the most ignorant man in the world. It is amazing how much the old man learned in the next 7yrs .

The concepts of "covert intolerance" and "narcissistic injury" could perhaps be, ah, discussed........ as could the mechanism by which "criticism" might constitute the latter....

By the way, I feel that should be "intolerance of" not "intolerance to".

A little while ago, we had a problem with one of our children at the local primary (actually, the problem was another child, but no need to go there).

I asked the headmistress what consequences there were for the children if they were badly behaved.

She looked at me as though I'd just arrived from Mars. "Consequences?", she said, "What do you mean, consequences".

Couldn't agree more, and was angry as hell that the school seemed to have no appreciation of the fact that there have to be consequences of crossing the boundaries, or they aren't boundaries.

They absolutely do though both of mine came close to a good slap on more than a few occasions; personally I think the tough patriarchal approach is better, they are looking for boundaries and we've got to put them in place and then police them.

90% of people of all ages are good. The entire world, both human and animal would be much much better off if the law had the guts to get rid of the evil 10%.

Please, please tell me that they get better. Living with a fifteen year old daughter is the most horrific experience I have ever had. I nearly moved into a Travel Lodge on Sunday!

The boys (now early twenties) were decidedly annoying in their mid teens but not a patch on one girl. Boys - make sure they are careful. Girls - lock them up, away from the boys 'being careful'!

No excuse for these teenagers behaviour, nor the person around here shooting cats with a high powered airgun.

Obviously, there are good people, and I'm unstinting in my praise for them. I don't mince my words when I'm talking (or writing) about the opposite - those that are truly evil.

I don't know if you have other children - if so my apologies - but if this is your first/only/oldest don't despair. They all seem to go through the hobgoblin phase in mid teens and emerge, I'm happy to say, generally ok.
