It takes a bit of practice to keep it still but much better visibility and it has the advantage of being able to be shone into the eyes of inconsiderate motorists who don't dip their headlights when running on the road at night.

Re: Battery back up surgical lighting?

Joking aside the new generation of led headtorches are better than surgery lights anyway. They always shine on target, last ages, and don't rely on the mains.
Not cheap, but absolutely brilliant. I bought the light with 2.5x magnification loupes mainly for dentistry, but use the light in all my ops. It is a revelation - I can see into the darkest corners of the abdomen! Battery lasts for 17 hours on full light intensity and charges quickly when plugged into the mains.

Re: Battery back up surgical lighting?

+1 for Petzl head torches and LED cycle lights.

Re: Battery back up surgical lighting?

I find UPS battery back ups fairly good for most purposes. ACP are one of the best and well known makes but are generally a little more expensive than their competitors.

Re: Battery back up surgical lighting?

Back up lighting sufficient to complete an op has been the subject of recent debate by PSS inspectors. (It is a requirement for VHs).

Current view seems to be that modern, good quality hi-intensity head torches provide good illumination for the surgeon (far better than a hand torch held by someone else, which would not be acceptable). UPS also said to be a good option. Generators etc. also an option, but obviously more expensive.

Whatever you have - you need to ensure batteries etc. are in date, as these things may not be used that often and you don't want a dead battery at the crucial moment. Also everyone needs to know where the equipment is kept and how to use it.

Re: Battery back up surgical lighting?

A decent UPS will keep a halogen or LED unit going long enough to get you out of trouble while you sort things out.
We did look into a back up generator as we have had a couple of longer periods without power.
