The person to speak to (who got me through my crisis without actually having to become bankrupt) is Gill Hankey - http://bankruptcyadvisoryservice.co.uk/debt-and-bankruptcy-guide.php . What she doesn't know isn't worth knowing, she's been there and got the T shirt, lovely lady, please remember me to her if/when you speak.

It will pass, don't lose hope.

Edit: phone her anon, she really is the business.

Re: Bankruptcy

If you're a BVA member, their legal helpline may be able to assist.

It gets to the point that you cannot see the wood for the trees. Perhaps talk to one of the valuers to see what the practice is worth. It might be more than you think but keep it very quiet if the financial problems are personal rather than business related. No point in letting someone know there might be a bargain coming up!

If you do have to stop trading, all I can suggest is that you do everything with a calm dignity. Best way to maintain self-respect IMO. Get everything clear, get good advice before tackling staff. They may suspect more than you think. Worry about the trivia such as making histories available only when you have too!

I chose to leave a partnership and went to work with a colleague I held (and still do) in very high regard. He showed great kindness and patience and it re-built a level of enthusiasm that had been lost in the myre!

As a divorce 'frequent flyer' I worked out that none of us have skins as thick as we think. Also take things one day at a time. Today may be crap but tomorrow might be better. It is often crap as well but in time the crap days get fewer and the good days get more regular.

The only exception is if you have a 15yr old daughter. All the days are crap but you live with it!

not really sure what to do about stopping trading, making histories available etc, let alone telling the staff that there are no jobs. :-(

Re: Bankruptcy

Very nearly (about 20 years ago and divorce related!). I understand the process has become a lot more straight forward in the last few years and thankfully absolutely no stigma to it!

One of our ex-receptionists is married to a decorator with a large business. He got into a mess because a couple of very big building companies used him as an interest free loan. Towards the end of his business he looked pretty bloody awful but within a very short time he was bright eyed and bushy tailed again because it took so much pressure off him when he stopped fighting. Today he claims it was the best thing he ever did - not sure I quite believe him 100% but everyone around him was much happier!

As a vet you will always have easily marketable skills and plenty of opportunities to earn a living.

Best of luck!

Re: Bankruptcy

I can't help Anon, not been there, but I didn't want this to go unanswered.
