In the next edition of The Veterinary Business Journal (VBJ), four of the major buying groups - St Francis Group, Vetcel, VetShare and Premier Vet Alliance - are compared.

The February edition should be with readers the first week of the month...

+1 for vetcel - when I bought this practice, the other buying groups had closed their books to new members so after I joined the vetcel group, I found the savings rebate easily covered the monthly outgoings - rates, telephones, electricity etc (excl salaries and the drugs bill). Includes contacts and recommendations to other services so my RPA retired, the group was able to recommend a replacement.

+1 for vetshare was put onto them by John Sower when he started helping me out pre purchase of the practice I have been at for ever. Ruth is extremely straight forward and makes everything very easy, basically does all the legwork for you and you can save a lot of money plus get loads of recommendations for services etc that are multi-practice verified. I am more than happy with the service. Truly it is a no brainer to join. also when I started it was 3 months free to see if you liked what they could do for you and you weren't tied in - walk away with minimal fuss if you were not happy.

PCS savings are pretty impressive with St Francis as well so it may be they have arrangements with all buying groups!

Similarly a small (sole charge) SA practice just moved to Vetshare from LVF as the later sold up, more by going with the flow really as I'm close to retirement and almost given up the will to bother but they seem reasonable for my purposes. The drug rebates aren't much better but I've saved an unbelievable amount swapping to PCS with them from CPC for my cadavers and clinical waste - more than halved my costs.

We are with St Francis. They are very vet friendly. We did look at some others but found them a bit pushy.

Quite difficult to compete without membership of one or another.

They are a helpful bunch and save me a chunk of money.
