I'm having one of those weeks, and it's only Wednesday...

Clients who ignore your recommendation for a caesarian because they simply can't afford it, then ring back an hour later to say there's a pup hanging out and stuck and miraculously they've found the money (but lost a pup).

Batty women who run 'cat charities' who think you will bend over backwards for them because they run a charity and they have RSPCA vouchers, but then get annoyed when you tell them the voucher doesn't cover the full cost (despite the price they're getting for neutering being vastly reduced compared to normal). 'What do you mean they have to have a pre-op check?!'

I once had someone in an East Lancashire town (where they got the idea for the League of Gentleman from) say " 'ere, you're not from round these part are you? Not sure about strangers in the valley".

He had very few teeth.

All of the above thread. Repeatedly, occasionally with even more annoying variations. Plus:

- The client who has the first appointment of the afternoon session (often because they don't want to be waiting if vets are running late) turning up late, not apologising, and then taking up even more than their allotted slot, thus making you late for everyone else. See also, showing up on the wrong day/week or an hour early and then expecting to be seen instantly.

- The "Friday night specials" "How long has he been poorly?" "Oh, about 4-5 days." They then expect an instant diagnosis and/or fix because "We're going away for the weekend."

- Clients who glare at me and say "I was expecting to see David/Anne/Ermintrude" - as I locum I get this a LOT. Even when I've got a good receptionist who tells them it's a locum on...

There are many more, but I'll stop now, I can feel my BP increasing as I type.....

Another one - the hatchet faced harridan who comes in clutching her little treasure to her bosom, glares suspiciously at the consulting room table that I have just diligently cleaned and says 'Are you quite sure your table is clean?'

'Yes indeed madam - in fact I would be happy to eat my lunch off it right now'.

I have to say that in comparison with how I used to be, as in the words of Dave Gilmour, 'I have become comfortably numb'.

However one client this afternoon combined several of my pet hates in one. They walked in the consulting room and left the door wide open, offered no assistance to help get teh cat out the basket, they then let the cat jump off the table and back in to the basket they'd left open on the floor, laughing 'he never does that at home' ha ha! We then got it out again and I asked them to hold the cat while I turned my back, it moved and of course they let it jump off the table again this time behind the display stand in the corner of the room and made no attempt to help while I tried to drag it out. Que this scenario repeated several times.

People who want a 2nd opinion but refuse to give you the name of their vet so you can request a history because they think this is somehow 'cheating'.

Clients who when asked to weigh their small breed dog spend the next 10 minutes figuring out how to get it on the scales.

Bosom clutchers and climbers (mentioned above).

Q "So what seems to be the problem?" A "I don't know, you're the vet"

Husky owners who call their dogs unpronouncable Icelandic names then get upset when you spell or say it wrong.

I once left the consult room when someone answerer their phone, saw the next appointment in the other consult room which wasn't in use at the time, then went back to the first.

I have to say that I appreciate that it is good to get things off your chest but honestly life is too short to let "them" get to you. try and let these things wash over you, rise above the mediocrity of it all and excel in your chosen profession. the people that are rude , irritating etc etc are generally not your best clients so don't give them the time of day and treat them as they treat you. If people talk whilst I am listening to the chest I will either hold my hand up to indicate for them to stop- this is universal and never fails or I will continue listening to the chest until they stop speaking and then say something like sorry were you saying something I cannot hear you whilst I am plugged in can you repeat what you said - you then get the condensed version and they never do it again! I am always sickeningly polite when I ask them to turn off their phone, sometimes I will leave the room without warning then come back in and say sorry have you finished I didn't want to listen in to your private conversation. they are usually so embarrassed they won't do that again either.

keep smiling , they will wonder what you are up to!

This is why i do my very best to avoid giving advice to my relatives when they have pet issues; i try not to do this to other vets! :)

Oh and people parking in our car-park when they're not clients, especially if it's a weekend and they park in the spaces closest to the doors, typically when you will need to admit a collapsed GSD!
