I have managed to persuade my boss that investing in a dental x-ray can only lead to good things, and as it is me that has been the most 'pro dental x-rays' in the practice, has asked me which type, but I don't have much knowledge about these

Re: Dental X-ray

[quote user="Suzanne Kelly"]

By far the most useful thing we got from the day was how to identify why images were wrong!

With DR it does not matter how many images you take. Plate in wrong place? Move it correctly! Image too stretched? Move it closer to 12 o'clock! We no longer worry about perfect positioning first time because we can all identify how to get the second one right! Very quickly you seem to get things right first time!

For most of us I would think DR is better. Roots and crowns of big dogs don't actually have to be on the same image!

Re: Dental X-ray

+1 for a wall mounted unit. Bisecting angles can be tricky at the start and with a hand held unit you won't know where you went wrong if your image isn't good enough. The legs on the stands are really long and awkward and drive me mad.
Re DR or CR, with DR you get an instant excellent quality image. The KV/Mas levels are incredibly low so it's very safe. However it only comes in a size 2. This is fabulous for cats and small dogs, not as easy with big dogs, especially if like me you struggle with bisecting angles.
The CR is brilliant in that the plates come in all sorts of sizes, but it takes a minute or so to develop.
If you win the lotto get both!
I've a DR and love it, except when Ive big dogs to do. Your best bet is to get someone to demo both for you and see which you like the best.
Don't get film, false economy. You'll get frustrated and cross and won't want to take X-rays.

Re: Dental X-ray

Just in case your boss is tempted by Ebay try to dissuade him! Several of the Chinese handheld units have been shown to be extremely hazardous!

Our elderly wall mounted unit is a bit powerful for the DR system we have. It is turned down to minimum for cats and have to place the unit further away to get the best exposure! I suspect newer units will be more flexible.

I expect it to fail its inspection every year but it keeps sailing through with glowing colours so it stays!

Re: Dental X-ray

Please come back if you have any more specific points to resolve.

Sorry for the late reply, been a stupidly busy week! Thanks very much for the info, I still need to chat to my boss as to what exactly he has in mind, but its useful to have some tips to input.

Quite excited about getting it all going, I'm hoping it will make me feel much more comfortable doing dentals, instead of sometimes feeling like I'm doing a lot of guesswork!

Many thanks again,

?? Does he mean a package of Xray generator plus DR sensor and digital acquisition? Or what? The generator is not "digital" unless you mean it has a digital control panel..... Obviously you want digital processing – I'd hate to have to go back to film.

About the generator: that it should be easily manoeuvreable and simple to use are the most important things. There are two makes of hand-held ones which suit some people very well. Personally in my situation I'd find hand-held a disadvantage and I'd rather have one mounted on a good and versatile er...mounting, either ceiling or wall.

You are not obliged to buy the rest of the stuff as a package: you can choose the DR sensors yourself (not much choice about size though, to all intents and purposes you are limited to size 2), and the software yourself from another supplier. If you go for CR, it's a bit slower and more hassle but you get more sizes (including a special rabbit one if you get it from iM3) and usually better definition (which you may not always need).

On the other hand if you buy a package, although some components may not be the best, at least you know it's all supposed to work together and who to call if it doesn't.

Talk to iM3 and Kruuse and Roots, also Burtons or even Henry Schein if you like them. There are also offers of cheaper stuff from the barrow-boy dealers like Vet Direct and the other one whose name escapes me, but I would be very very cautious about those.

If you go for CR and you have the good sense to already have a CR35V system in the practice, you won't need a new CR scanner or software, just the sensors.

By the way, the software until recently has been, depressingly, Windows only. However you can now have Radiovision, from Haas Software, which is excellent , and stay with your Mac. (See http://www.radiovisiondigital.com/RadioVision/Home.html)
