Couple of concerns: I would be reluctant to pay a subscription to access a site unless I'm sure they have the book I need. My books are very old by the time I'm ready to pass them on so out of date. I also think I am unlikely to go to the effort of advertising and posting the books when I can easily give them away myself.

I wouldn't bet the house on a business like this as it would rely on people who are already time poor to go to a bit of an effort when they could just give the books away to someone locally with a lot less effort (or just throw out the 20 yo text books).

Hi Rob

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that students should have the most up to date text books but I am guessing that for many of the subjects like anatomy, that things don't change a huge amount.

I'm sure we were told that even information in the most recent editions of the clinical books was already out of date by the time they had been published..!

I've got a few old textbooks, Dyce just has less coloured pictures, but several of the names are out of date in my immunology book. I guess it might be most useful for very recently qualified vets, whose books are quite recent.

By the way, what's all this about "gifting" ? You mean giving, I presume. "Gift" is a noun.

(Yes, I know there is an adjective "gifted" – it means "in possession of a gift" where "a gift" means "a talent".)

I think that sounds much more sensible. It would also prevent several students clubbing together and using a single subscription to log in and purchase books (not that any vet students would be this dishonest.....)

My main concern would be that most of the text books I no longer use are out of date, and I suspect students will want the most upto date editions.

Basically, i think it's a really good idea, but think you'd be better off charging say 50p per transaction (to the buyer) than subscription as students are tight and don't like to pay up front for something you don't know how much you will use :)

Hi Michael

Thanks so much for the feedback.

The idea is that the site just acts as a listing site, and yes, the people gifting the books would just send direct to the 'buyer'. If people were happy to gift the books, then the person getting the free book would pay them for the postage costs.
The transaction would be between the gifter and the person getting the books, so I wouldn't take a cut or make anything from each transaction.

That's why I thought about charging a subscription fee for the people looking for books.

Does that make more sense, and sound any more appealing?!

I think you'd be better putting a token charge on the books rather than charging for access.

I have listed on ebay and I have given to EMS students and people I know going to uni. That question wouldn't let me chose more than one option.

Would you be better off acting as a broker and getting the person listing to send direct to buyer. Even if you covered the collection of fees.

Some books do have a value so the option of asking some money would add an extra aspect.

What I can't see myself doing is paying to post old (heavy) textbooks to you, for you to sell them and make money!
