It would be interesting idea if you could buy membership by the day - £10/day (as a random figure) to allow people to do locum shifts etc. It would need to be a chunk more expensive to put us all off doing so, but that way if you do less than 89 days per year you are winning!

I would NOT be in favour of relaxed CPD requirements for part time staff as they are getting less clinical exposure - you can put an argument forwards for more CPD. If you are clever you can get your 35 hours without spending any money whatsoever. I do appreciate a new baby or family crisis then time could be short, but allowing you to average your CPD over 3 years overcomes this. I expect most vets do far more CPD than they need to, even if they don't record it all (guilty). At this moment in time I could do no more for the next 2 years without any problem!

It would if all vets were full time, then £890 is affordable?

However until the RCVS follow the VDS lead and stage the fees for degrees of work, this added to CPD requirements and child care makes coming back to work for many part timers a step too far.

I'm not taking sides in this, but to start with let everyone be clear about this: would you be happy to pay a much bigger RCVS subscription (say, two or three times the present figure?) to finance investigations and private prosecutions?

Well.. I guess as I often tell our clients, you usually get what you pay for.

However a fee of £890 pa would seem a pretty small investment if it could protect our work from undercutting by unqualified competitors. It seems likely that employed vets including a majority of those on RCVS council would not see it like that

I have currently a case going through the rcvs regarding a well known veterinary purveyor of pseudo-scientific alternative junk therapy as I firmly believe this brings our profession into disrepute.

We are approaching the first anniversary of my complaint, due to various 'communication problems'. I am still awaiting news of how this is progressing.

I will inform you all of how it goes if I manage to out-live the process.

Next time you hear some politician or doctor whinging about antibiotic resistance being due to wicked veterinary surgeons, point them to that. On the other hand, as VMD can tell you, it's hard to do anything about foreign dealers. Of course, the drugs ought to be intercepted by Customs when they arrive, but how likely is that?

Trading Standards do do it, when the information is laid and can be proven and there is a good chance of successful prosecution. But sometimes the Trading Standards people don't really understand the law I think.

However I am told that Trading Standards are so fed up with trying to nail Vedra and her "rodentologist" chums that they just refuse to have anything to do with her any more.

The Farriers Registration Council takes a similarly robust attitude to unqualified farriery. This is something I've often taken up with RCVS Council members - and been disgusted by their spineless attitude.

Always been surprised by this attitude from the RCVS. They bang on about our primary responsibility being to animal welfare but take a weak and feeble approach to non-vets diagnosing and treating.

Homeopaths and aromatherapists are fine as long as they are not allowing suffering by failure to treat. Of course the epileptic dog on magic tablets and the heart failure dog on special water should be tackled by the PIC then the DC.

I have seen both happen, status epilepticus because 'it might need conventional treatment soon' and a cavalier drowning in its own fluids!

Thankfully the only local 'alternative therapy' vet to us here seems to use a combination of conventional treatments and 'witchcraft'.

David, you missed out qualified vets offering charlatan service like homoeopathy and aroma-therapy etc etc to vulnerable, desperate and gullible clients.
