I'm looking for decommissioned/nonfunctional freestanding xray units for use in education; student vet nurses practicing practical tasks. Does anyone have a spare unit? Only the light bulb and collimator need to work, NO actual radiographs

Re: Decommissioned/Nonfunctional Xray units

The leads had the live and neutral reversed and came with well known brand computers. The incorrect fuses also came with the items! Nothing that should have been dodgy!

Having had a 'genuine' iphone charger go bang I now go with non-original but branded chargers. Amazon basics range seem the safest bet.

Re: Decommissioned/Nonfunctional Xray units
As an aside, our PAT tester (client!) has identified a number of incorrect fuses but also several pre-wired kettle type leads that were wired incorrectly in China
I guess with a dodgy CE mark; add to those most of the cheap USB chargers on sale online (http://www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk/guides-and-advice/electrical-items/chargers/)

Re: Decommissioned/Nonfunctional Xray units

Good point, Bob! That said, our PAT tester is a College employee so he PAT tests pretty much everything the comes through the door as a matter of course.

:)

Re: Decommissioned/Nonfunctional Xray units

I was more concerned about the safety of the units especially if faulty. A competent electrician should be able to by-pass the actual generator and connect up only the LBD.

These machines are usually metal construction and really should not be used as a means to reduce student numbers!

(As an aside, our PAT tester (client!) has identified a number of incorrect fuses but also several pre-wired kettle type leads that were wired incorrectly in China. These came with legitimate electrical items which fortunately did not prove to be a safety hazard.

My advice is to use someone certified to do PAT testing but check the definition of an item that needs to be PAT tested. A lot of companies like to charge per item and do not care if they are portable or not!)

They may have some old units sitting in storage. We always used to source ours this way in days gone by.

Health & Safety may restrict supply but you may get round this by getting an engineer to decommission the actual generator but leave the electrical supply to the LBD.

Units will need to be PAT tested anyway!

Perhaps keep checking Hilditch Auctions.

Re: Decommissioned/Nonfunctional Xray units

Hi Martin,

You're generous to a fault, but yes, I'm afraid that's a little too old for what we need. Needs to have a collimator.

Thanks for the offer, though!

Re: Decommissioned/Nonfunctional Xray units

I was going to say yes but then I've just checked the one I have that's been gathering dust in the loft for the past 30 years and it is so old it doesn't even have a light collimator. It has a fixed aperture for a 24x30cm film at the correct distance and a pointy thing to aim at the centre of the cassette that swings out the way. I guess you won't be wanting to take that off my hands but your still welcome to it!
