My daughters and I always won the 'father and daughter best dancing award' at school events. I'm not sure if that was because I really could dance or it was just a sympathy vote. My daughters have never been embarrassed (or at least they've never told me) by my dancing.

Almost every dad should be prosecuted for crimes against dancing. I use it as a weapon against the junior members of the family. One was misbehaving at the local cinema, a quick dance brought them into line! They were extremely embarrassed, I have long since stopped bothering with embarrassment.

I just look back on the opportunities that would have been there at university had I not been held back by the fear of being embarrassed!

I remember almost falling over when a client of mine, who was clearly not gifted with a high intellect, announced he was going to University. You could blown me down with a feather... until he admitted he was going to study "Equine sciences". Oh I see... you mean the stuff your mum has been trying to get you to do around the yard for the past 12 years and failed at miserably! THAT's what you're going to UNIVERSITY for???

My elder daughter read English and Philosophy at Birmingham. OK not too bad really and half the point of a degree as Mrs A constantly tells me is that you learn transferable skills and have proven you can stick at something until it is done. However said daughter realised that this wasn't going to open many doors for her on the career ladder and blamed me for not encouraging her to do more science at school (which I actually palpably did I may add)!

Following that she decided to stay in Brum and do a masters degree in computer science in one year with no previous background and she very nearly pulled it off (transferable skills again) but took two years in the end. She then spent a year as a ski/snowboard instructor in Japan (she did her ski instructor course in Canada in her gap year), her intention being to make connections and get a job in Tokyo in the computer industry but the earthquake put a stop to that, so she came back, walked into a job as software developer in the city, and at just turned 28 earns almost as much as I do.

Where there's a will there's a way.

Two of our office staff have degrees one religious studies one zoology, neither put them on their cv when applying, both previously worked at tesco and are both great members of staff. Our children have been deceived into going to university to do subjects they liked at school as schools tell them that they just needed any degree to get a good job.

Maybe this person hadn't found their true 'vocation' (if this even exists) yet. Or maybe they think they need a vet receptionist experience to get another different job somewhere else.
