And I have to defend my client against the accusation of neglect. They had been in 2 days before for diarrhoea (detected that day). And they came in with mainly eggs (which are laid in minutes), and the first wriggly ones, and in a well combed fluffy persian they are really difficult to see and find properly. I was impressed that they had found them, and in time.

They haven't been back, so i presume they have been able to keep the cat clean and dry and fly egg free even without the help of insecticides.

But thanks all, again, for interesting and helpful suggestions.

''WARNING: cypermethrin is toxic to cats! Cats do not tolerate therapeutic doses for dogs. This is associated with glucuronidase deficiency in cats, the enzyme responsible for breaking down cypermethrin and other synthetic pyrethroids in the organism in a process called glucuronidation. As a consequence, cypermethrin remains much longer in the cat's organism than in dogs or other mammals.'

Re: Maggot infestation on a DLH

F10 Germicidal Wound Spray with Insecticide

Germicidal Wound Spray with Insecticide is a ready to use topical, spot-on application spray active against bacteria and fungi for wound treatment with the capabilities of repelling flies and preventing or eliminating infestations due to fly strike.

Combination the excellent properties of the F10 Germicidal Barrier Ointment or F10 Antiseptic Solution with the added insecticidal activity of

Cypermethrin (0.25%) and Piperonyl Butoxide (1.25%)

Fly strike in rabbits and other small pets: One initial 5-second application of the F10 Wound Spray to the infested area will usually result in complete elimination of the maggots. To preventre-infection treat with further daily applications of the Wound Spray or with F10 Germicidal Barrier Ointment with Insecticide.
Where the risk of fly-strike is high, following diarrhoea or urinary incontinence for example, use the F10 Germicidal Wound Spray with Insecticide as a preventative control measure.

Re: Maggot infestation on a DLH

Maybe some meloxicam if it's not grooming properly.

Re: Maggot infestation on a DLH

Does anyone use anything on rabbits that already have flystrike?
Still have a container of it. So old it does not have an expiry date. I have been known to put a light sprinkle on maggotty rabbits after thorough clipping, cleaning and drying the area. it was well hidden during our VMD inspection. I have assumed that like Droplix it might have become more potent with time!

Names from the past!

Ivomec works well (I have little faith in Advocate) but why would Stronghold be inferior, I wonder?

Make sure the area is dried so get the hairdryer out.
What can be used to prevent/after treat maggots on a long haired cat?
Client education and basic care?! This is surely a case of neglect, its bad enough in a rabbit that's been left to wallow in its own shit in the hutch in the garden but there should really be no excuse in a cat unless its been in an RTA and laid up injured with open wounds. This client would get a piece of my mind.

But to answer the OP a bit more unemotionally, I don't see you need to do anything other than just clean it up an treat any wounds as you have done. As the above intimates - there should be no need for ongoing preventative treatment if the cat is looked after properly.

Ditto! I saved it for ages past its expiry date (same with my last tube of Dermobion). I distinctly remember using the last of the tub. It was on a tup belonging to a hobby farmer in one of the damp valleys near the North York Moors. He'd been on holiday and come back to find his tup depressed. I distinctly remember the noise of the maggots wriggling thourgh its drenched fleece which I could hear from 10yds away as I walked down the field to it. I clipped it from head to toe, dried it out and drenched it in Negasunt powder. I have never, ever, ever, ever, ever seen so many maggots on one animal. It survived, but always had a slightly depressed air to it from that day on.

Re: Maggot infestation on a DLH
