Just wondering are there any ill effects of subcutaneous administration of paracetamol subcut - IV line wasn't in place and now pooled subcut. Anything we can do to help disperse the medication ?
Thanks

Why not? I think, for kindness' sake, if an animal has a line in then anything that is safe to go IV should go IV rather than SQ or IM.

Paracetamol is a nice anti-pyretic and a decent painkiller. We quite often use it concurrently with NSAIDs, and our bitch spays go home on Pardale rather than oral NSAIDs (they get meloxicam IV on induction). Cat-safe paracetamol is top of my Drugs That Should Be Invented list.

Re: Paracetamol subcutaneous
I am wondering why anyone would want to use it I/V.
The human injectable version is designed to go IV.

Re: Paracetamol subcutaneous

OK I will refine that question: I am wondering why anyone would want to use it I/V. SC OK if you cant give pills, but I just can't imagine a circumstance I would use it IV rather other than a dog you couldn't give NSAIDs to that was already maxed out on morphine. Maybe I just answered my own question!

Re: Paracetamol subcutaneous
Am I the only one wondering why you are giving paracetamol in the first place?
It's a useful adjunct to other NSAIDs.

We don't have the injectable form, but have considered it.We get through lots of Pardale V

They use it s/c in children and the elderly so I wouldn't envisage a problem.

Re: Paracetamol subcutaneous

Am I the only one wondering why you are giving paracetamol in the first place?

Re: Paracetamol subcutaneous

I thought it was OK to give paracetamol SC

Re: Paracetamol subcutaneous

I think all you can do is dilute with subcutaneous fluids in the area. I've never had any sloughing with perivascular drugs, but haven't had anything other than propofol years ago, so hopefully you'll be ok! Not sure of specifics with that drug though.
