Google tells me that they are a different species to raccoons - more like foxes I guess. I do worry they will catch on and people will try and keep the like dogs and then be surprised when injuries result from undomesticated animals in a house.

Not superwoman by any means, the house is a tip and everything is in chaos but I do feel like my brain has had enough time off and now needs to restart albeit only for a bit of time each week.

I used to only see these in zoos but now see a few as pets as there are a couple of quite successful breeders in the UK now. Quite nice animals, much like terriers to handle if socialised well - not bad but wouldn't 100% trust them not to snap. I haven't come across any true pets (in house) yet but it is only a matter of time... Honestly they aren't the worst pet if looked after well and given sufficient space and opportunity to exercise. They aren't full on carnivores and if fed meat alone can get truly obese, mixed veg, some lower sugar fruit and a low fat dog food seem to work well for our zoo ones. They have a very heavy moult - I couldn't believe I was looking at the same animals when I saw them this week, they have almost halved in size with the loss of winter fur.

My vaccine protocol is to cover primarily for distemper so we do a single vacc (Nobivac - the freeze dried bit of the combined one) in those >12wks boosting annually, and add lepto (2 vaccs to start, boost annually, same protocol as dogs) in if any perceived risk, or to be used for public displays/handling. Have wormed with panacur, not had to treat for external parasites. Neutering is just like dogs but the ovarian pedicle seems much looser so it isn't as unpleasant as a bitch spay! I use ACP/bupre for pre-med then propofol induction based on the dog GA protocols used in our practice and it has worked well.
