The irony is that the whole cascade edifice, allegedly designed to improve animal welfare, does nothing, just puts up the cost to the end user and has certainly, and in my certain knowledge, caused the euthanasia of pet animals solely because of the cost of the Vet Licensed product.

Well, if I had more money I could consider just taking a sabbatical (I'm not asking, Alex!) and just any meds myself. Or I could start a petition - seems to be the way to do things nowadays- if I had more mental capacity to take anything else on.

If drugs are being sent for disposal the carrier and end 'processor' would need waste disposal licences!

[/quote] Again I cannot see how this is anything to do with VMD surely their remit is the correct usage and storage of medication for animals under our care. There is no offence in possessing OOD medicines and once they're out the country they are beyond jurisdiction.

When I discussed this with the VMD they said that supply of out of date drugs to a charity inside the UK was illegal but they could be sent to overseas charities without problem.

In practice you can send in date drugs to the UK office of the charity but if they are out of date they would need to be sent to their overseas address. It could be argued that a vet taking them is acting as a courier to deliver them to the charity abroad but you may need to clarify this with the VMD.

The trouble is Martin that some of our colleagues are nearer the start of the career than the end :) and would prefer not to be prosecuted by the VMD if at all possible. Sorry Hannah, I had a feeling this would happen, because we have been asked to do this before, but it's better to check and not get in trouble, even if the rules are stupid!

This is the sort of situation where I would give the middle finger to the VMD and hope they try to prosecute me then I would make sure the story got into all the newspapers with the headline, 'Anally retentive organisation with ridiculous regulations cause wastage of useful medication and animals unnecessarily die and suffer as a result'. Or words to that effect.

Seriously I cannot see how the VMB can have any any jurisdiction over this if the vet to whom they are given declares that he/she is aware it is out of date and that the medication is to be used solely outside the UK or if not he/she will ensure its legal disposal. If anything the the authority that would be more interested would be the HSE for not fully complying with regulations on disposal of un-used medication.

Yes it is ridiculous. Could the vet taking the drugs sign some type of off licence drug form saying the are aware of the risks?
