medication on prescription for us to put in stock and sell to clients as
they do not have a wholesale licence. We previously sent a script with
no animal name and wrote 'for dispensing

Re: Wholesale prescriptions

It doesn't really matter if clients aren't happy - just tell them it's the law - end of.

If the entire profession simply obeys the law without even looking for loopholes, then it's a level playing field, so they'll just have to like it or lump it.

I'm very annoyed that a veterinary surgeon can even consider this action.

wasn't correct and had to speak to them as clients were not happy so
they may have reviewed their policies and realised they didn't have a
licence to do it. I have had pharmacies happily do repeat prescriptions
for controlled drugs when legally they are only valid for 28 days and
then suddenly say they cannot do it any more and they need a new script
every month (quite correctly). They had been subject to an inspection
and the problem was picked up.

Re: Wholesale prescriptions

I wondered what had changed. I went to our local chemist to get a pack
of Destolit with our usual pharmacy request form, and they didn't
mention anything about a wholesaler's licence but did say they needed a
name to put on the label. I gave them the name of the dog (live and
kicking may I add) that we mainly wanted it for, which then caused more
problems as they already had an unrelated human patient with the same
name!

Re: Wholesale prescriptions

I know an ex-GP who went to prison for three years, for writing
prescriptions for deceased patients. Admittedly, the primary accusation
was that he was profiting personally from the payments involved, but the
secondary charges were related to the actual issuing of prescriptions. I
doubt our legal position is much different.

Re: Wholesale prescriptions

Metronidazole is not expensive even at wholesaler prices. Some
veterinary wholesalers will even negotiate with human product prices!

We have regularly used the local Boots (small shop!) and not had a
problem with licences. It may be Boots have the right paperwork. Perhaps
try another pharmacist or supply a named animal prescription for the
actual patient.

We use Munro about once a month for the regular supplies but worth
checking prices against wholesaler, sometimes you can get caught out!

Re: Wholesale prescriptions

Writing scripts for a dead animal doesn't sound very legal at all. I don't think we've
had to get stuff from a pharmacy more than once every 2-3 years.

Get an account with a pharmaceutical supplier if you are using much of this stuff. We use http://www.munrovet.com/

Producing a prescription for a dead animal is fraud.
