I was lucky that I had worked for 14yrs before the first child so it wasn't too bad to return.
I did some of the refresher days as they were cheap and I wanted to show the RCVS that I'd been keeping up.
They were really helpful.

I've been out of clinical work for a couple of yrs more recently due to various things and have been volunteering at a charity practice more recently. That has helped me too.

Don't Do yourself down- you passed the degree and have acquired all sorts of skills on the way- I bet your negotiation skills are fab -)))

Re: mumternships

I had 7 years out with children. Best thing I did was go to get some hands on experience at a local practice. I also went to BSAVA congress about 6 months prior to that ,to get up to date with things. The surgery was much easier to return to, but so many of the drugs had changed, I struggled with the medicine side of things.

The first 3 years were very, very tough and I almost gave up on several occasions. In the end, I decided I couldn't know everything so read up on conditions as I encountered each case, and I asked tonnes of questions which I'm sure exasperated my colleagues at times.

I've been back part time for about 5 years but complicated or uncommon medicine cases are still very challenging.

Re: mumternships

Yes, BVA run clinical refresher day courses in partnership with the RVC. It's not a formal internship or anything, just a series of low-cost courses.
