The only reason for going for the Halo was the lost/stolen facility. We already have Identichip readers!

We have a Halo scanner and it spends most of its time in the cupboard not being used. I would get one that Identichip sell as they have lasted us years.

Really chuffed with the Halo scanner from ebay! It even reads temperatures from Biothermo chips! That was somewhat surprising!

The mains charger that came with it is unlikely to pass any form of PAT testing so will be binned!

It charges by USB. Just plug it into the consulting room comp when not using it....

Aww no. Ive just ordered a pink One! On the basis it was a couple of quid cheaper than its non pink counterparts. :-D

I bought a few at London Vet Show 2 years ago and we've gone back to our old sturdy big old Bayer Tracer ones too.

It won't read some US chips, only ISO ones. Neither will it read Avid-encrypted ones (though we only have 1 client - from the US - with one of these and they carry their own scanner)

Better than others but not as good as the bigger e.g. Isomax scanners

Ditto. We seem to have ended up with 3 of them, but find we need that number to ensure we have some chance of one with a bit of charge in the battery.

One of the clients we got one for has had hers about 6 months and not had to recharge it yet. She sells a few litters of puppies and gets them chipped, hence her need for a scanner. When she got the scanner she left it attached to her computer overnight.

When It arrived I took it out of the box and it compares to the DEFRA supplied scanner we have (we were allowed to keep one from the scrapie scheme days when all the other kit went back).

Picked chips up very well, but even very small puppies struggle to fit through the ring.............

I spoke to someone at London Vet Show who was selling microchips and scanners (can't remember the name of the company of the top of my head) including the Halo scanners. They reported that they took several hours to charge by USB and felt there were better scanners on the market. Does anyone have experience of their battery charging time and battery life?

Do the halo ones read all the chips I need them too? And do they pick up the chips easily enough?

We have a scanner without a loop bit just now and it can take a while to find the chips.

Halo scanners are able to update to the database of missing pets and will flag up an alert if the chip scanned has been reported lost or stolen. It would be great to see more vets using these day to day and routinely scanning every dog and cat that came in. The USB link to the computer will allow the database link to the scanner to be updated regularly too. As scanners go they are not expensive.

Halo scanners £41 from Vet Direct. Have ordered a couple for clients. Seem to work OK. Only gripe is need to charge them via a USB port

We use biothermo chips so not much choice!

No idea how good they are but about £50 on ebay!
