Data theft is a minor problem IMHO, if you are going to give a decent OOH service when you dump them at night.

I'd be surprised if the IT guys can't block any data download. We could always ask the team that did the RC's after all they're brilliant at IT.

Yeah, true. But you'd only steal from one practice, not several.......... and you'd be more likely to be found out and get a punch on the nose. Oops, not allowed to say that.

It should b the easiest thing ever to an IT head. Put the 'client database only' in a cloud and let the vet from the OOH system access to it, just like any other employee from the base practice. Access to records, but not to modify anything. I'd also tell you this: Access to financial record of the client is of use too: It is important to know how far you can go when the client has a direct claim and has no idea that the main practice is about to reach the 'limit per condition'. Can prevent A LOT of trouble ahead...

For sure, and the compulsion should must come from PSS. Must be part of OOH centre requirement.

As I said a long time ago on this thread just imagine being confronted by an irate owner and dog with a mid-line incision and all the owner knows is that the dog had some sort of op. 'cos it was vomiting.

I have no idea but I imagine there is software that can access records remotely but have layers of access, without being able to access accounts etc. [ho,ho, find out if this client hasn't paid his bill though]

The details are on the link I posted.

Having total access to patient notes removes a big hurdle for OOH centres, after all it's not as if there are going to be to many providers.

This needs to be done right. These log-me-in type programmes allow full access to a computer. It's very different allowing read only access to histories but this would allow access to all the financial information, practice database, email if on the same computer etc etc. A lot of the accessible information is sensitive.

The people to push would the Vet Envoy guys - they are looking at getting various systems to talk to each other. I'm sure they could create a platform that would allow owner details and history to be accessed without compromising confidential data.

From the latest Disciplinary Committee Hearings:

.....Vets4Pets; gastric torsion,gastrotomy, discharged after three days....condition deteriorated... referred to their OOH provider Vets Now.... the only information available was what the dog's owners were able to tell him.

.....dog hospitalised overnight, given pain relief, antibiotics and placed on a drip.

Transferred back to Vets4Pets and died in the car on the way.

Fortunately case dismissed.

Pretty obvious the dog needed more than generic care, but how could the vet know what had been done without something from the dumping practice!!!

Pretty obvious records should be available to OOH centres.

Can't be beyond the wit of IT gurus to make it available before there is a high-profile disaster!.

Our vaccine fridge (a medical one) reads only degrees. If it is good enough for the human pharmaceutical profession it should be enough for the PSS. Fortunately the temperate logger inside reads to a millionth of a degree do we should be OK!

Be careful! Some of the new fridges with paper thin sides won't get down to the right temp at all, you'll certainly have to run them on minimum.

The real old one with sides as thick as The Tower was fine.....

[/quote] Yes we had them as well. These days though I fear the conversation " Your dog died overnight" clients used to accept it. These days they want to know what time and who was present. It won't be long before a serious complaint arises about an animal dying unobserved in a practice overnight. Particularly if that hasn't been made clear when the animal is admitted - and there's no predicting how the DC will react.

Ok, I suppose my question, more specifically, is how many deaths could be prevented with 24 hour care rather than their death is discovered sooner or the animal leaves this mortal world less gently?
