So all is ok! It seemed she had a copy of the rabies certificate before the stamp and dates were added for some reason, as well as the official stamped/dated version. So I have been able to fill in the passport off of the back of that. Pet travel stuff seems to be one of my biggest headaches, if it's anything other than straightforward. I think I just feel worried that the stakes are high if I get something wrong!

Re: Pet passport question...

The twice I've been through the tunnel with the dog no one seemed concerned about her.
Or contact the vet in Australia to issue an 'official' vaccination certificate/duplicate?

Or drive with the cat tomorrow on Eurotunnel because they won't check any paperwork on the way out (from Eurotunnel website: When leaving the UK pets are not required to go through any Pet Control checks. It is only when returning to the UK that they are required to go to the Pet Reception Building at our Calais Terminal) but obviously we shouldn't suggest that as it goes against the 21 day wait!

Re: Pet passport question...
Yes - surely this is the simplest thing to do - then you won't have any worries at all.
This would be my preference but in my speedy typing last night I didn't give you the full story! Lady has broken up with her partner and is going back to live in Germany with her parents. Hence she would like the cat to travel as soon as possible! She started getting teary in the consult room bless her. Luckily the cat can stay with her partner for a bit, but obviously she is clean to try and make a clean break as quickly as possible I guess.

I rang DEFRA this AM. They said that the lady should have some sort of certificate for entry to the EU which will have on it how long the cats rabies vacc lasts until (i.e when a booster is due) and should have an official stamp. The bit of paper I have seems to be a rabies certificate, but the bit at the bottom of it where there is space to write dates and stamp it - is blank. Above that there is the all the animals details, date the vac was given on, the vaccination sticker and a signature with the vets details, but again no official stamp. DEFRA also said not to staple or stick any certificate in a new PET passport. They said basically if you've got something in front of you that's officially stamped by the Australia government then you can happily sign a new document on their behalf as it were.

So basically I have asked the lady to check her cats paperwork and see if there is anything resembling the EU certificate and if not then we'll have to give rabies vacc and wait 3 weeks.

Relevant sections of the passport may be completed, signed and stamped on the basis of evidence of procedures carried out by any registered veterinary surgeon. This evidence may be in the form of:

• a completed EU pet passport issued by another authorised veterinarian;
• a record or certificate of current rabies vaccination which bears the microchip/tattoo number of the animal;
• a blood test result provided by a recognised laboratory showing a test result indicating a rabies antibody titre of 0.5 IU/ml or above and bearing the animal’s microchip/tattoo number and date of rabies vaccination carried out prior to blood sampling

A passport can also be issued for an animal accompanied by a third country certificate headed Annex I or Annex II entering the European Community for non commercial movements (Regulation (EC) No. 998/2003’ (Decision (EC) No. 2011/874) which has been issued in a non-EU country, provided the animal has been implanted with a microchip and is covered by a current rabies vaccination (and has been blood tested in the case of an unlisted Third Country) as noted in section IV of that certificate

Re: Pet passport question...
If you are in any doubt then the best thing would be to re vaccinate and ask the client to wait the 21 days, especially if the original paperwork doesn't show the date booster vaccination is required by.
I have issued several pet passports for animals that came into the country from abroad under the pet passport scheme in the days when they arrived with a rabies vaccination certificate, a blood test result and so on.

But the certificate must show the identichip number to comply with the regulations.

If you are in any doubt then the best thing would be to re vaccinate and ask the client to wait the 21 days, especially if the original paperwork doesn't show the date booster vaccination is required by.

However if the paperwork was prepared for the Pet Travel Scheme all the necessary details should be on that paperwork - chipping sate, vaccination date, expiry date etc - just as it would be on an EU pet passport. And you can use that information to complete a UK pet passport.

Re: Pet passport question...

Did they provide a "valid until" date?
