2.39%. I would guess that this has been carefully calculated to cover the extra costs and no more. I'd have thought that 2% would be more like it, but I'm not arguing over £1.18. (But I didn't pay by card )

I just logged in to pay my fees and the box is automatically ticked - meaning it is an opt-in - now at least. They may have changed it in response to complaints. Still don't know what justification they think they have in selling members' info. Also, £7.18 to pay by card is a bit steep isn't it?

Not happy about this either, especially since I couldn't see a similar box on the paper copy that I was just about to fill in. Does this mean that you can only opt out if you renew online?

Yes Michael, you are correct, however this section has absolutely nothing to do with verifying one's professional status. This basically them sharing your and my data for whatever-they-want. And also earning some dosh on the side. Fr me this is not just inmproper but immoral as they are the de-facto monopoly (as Francisco put it so well) regulatory institution of our profession.

The box was absolutely not ticked when I opened the form. The screen capture reflects what I had on my screen.

It should be a requirement for any agreement to opt in (or details should not be passed on at all!). The box on the website is to opt out!

Why not just have a box for 'I would prefer my email account to be filled with even more junk and please arrange for the postman to get a hernia carrying more rubbish to my letter box!'

Almost anybody can be supplied with these details and it over-rides the telephone preference service and MOPS (mail order version) as you are giving consent.

The old registers were probably sent for recycling to Africa. Very enterprising to use the details inside!

hi all,

a few of the old copies of the rcvs register are floating around africa, cos i am getting these sob letters from people there with return african return addreses . i know its the vet register they are using because of a spelling mistake the rcvcs made in my address until i corrected it .

There obviously has to be a way of verifying any professionals status. Anyone could buy a copy of the old printed register and find most of our home addresses.

I always tick these boxes, however in fairness I should say that when I just filled mine out the box appeared to be automatically ticked. Therefore I would have had to deliberately untick it if I wanted my data shared. Unusual way to do it but there you are.

Im not happy with that either. Since the organisation has the monopoly of the profession, my take is that, in the interest of the public, there shouldn't be an opting out, and no opting in either. IF the RCVS is there to protect the public, the public itself should be asked if they're happy with their vets data being 'up for grabs'.
