This morning I booted up the computer, went to the news section,and read £2 billion. It's now been modified to £576 million. Still a lot.

Yes Martin. I've comeacross a few of that type, but I think what Bob is getting at are the cut-price chains who hire inexperienced ( cheap ) new grads, then (for financial reasons ) don't provide adequate back-up.

[/quote] There's a few of the latter and they have an excuse. I'm talking about those practice owners who care more about money than caring for their patients and are good at pulling the wool over their clients eyes to make them think they are still doing a good job.

The world has indeed changed, London is the financial capital of the world and the money invested here by these financial institutions is a huge amount of our GDP. If you start frightening the bankers away with draconian penalties and capping their pay/bonuses the whole economy will suffer. This may be a bitter pill to swallow, the amounts of money involved seem astronomical to us but they are a drop in the global financial ocean. I'll admit that if it was my money that had been lost I would not be happy but it is a fact of life.

Look at it from a perspective closer to home: there are plenty of crap vets, charging silly loss leader prices and bullshitting their clients earning more than me for doing a worse job who worry me a lot more.

RBS are still unable to open a business account properly. We had to wait 7 weeks before we could access our account on-line. They have offered £100 plus a little bottle of something as compensation!

As a result of their incompetence we were unable to get on the account and we went overdrawn for a split second or two. They tried to charge us £30 as a penalty. This was refunded!

Bunch of clowns! Only stay with them because my loans are at 1.5% over base!!

That doesn't explain why Fred Goodwin is still walking free !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Admitedly,the law has changed in many ways in the last 80 years, but if it's impossible to imprison himnow, whilst it was possible to imprison a man for the identical crime 80 years ago,then it's a perfect example of one of the very many changes for the worse that have taken place.

Then, people were expected to take responsibility for their own actions - whether that was a member of the House of Lords who published a dodgy prospectus, or a housemaid who hadn't the sense to keep her legs crossed untilshe was married !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now, no one is held accountable, and the poor taxpayers pockets treated as though bottomless - well they're not - and this particular taxpayer is fed up of being robbed - whether for the benefit of reckless bankers (Fred Goodwin) or wastes of space.

It does all seem a bit perverse but unless you know the finances of RBS inside out it could be that without the work of these bankers it may have suffered even greater losses so their bonuses are justified. Not losing another £100 billion is maybe far more valuable than a £10 billion profit. Just a thought.
