I just called VDS and they going to send me all information.

They told me on the phone that I could cancel my direct debit when I had finished working, so I presume that's officially ok.

Re: Veterinary Surgeon insurance
You can do a monthly direct debit with them so it makes it more manageable (don't tell them I told you but why not do that and just cancel it if you don't need it anymore)
Because, I suspect, it would invalidate all cover so if there were a complaint ,related to something a week or two ago, that arrived after you'd cancelled, you'd be in a good deal of trouble.

Re: Veterinary Surgeon insurance

Hi Anna,

I think you still may be able to get cover from the vds cheaper than £600 if you went for one of their part time policies (see below the info taken from the vds website) as it is based on days per year rather than hours per week, and you can additionally contact them to add to it in the event of your hours going up (although not sure how much this would cost). I am under a similar situation as i have been doing a phd but wanted to keep my hand in, so have volunteered at a local practice.

"VDS has refined the existing part time premium option so that the 22 hour weekly average
condition for part time eligibility has been converted into 150 days per year. Two additional
part‐time options have been added to cater for those who work up to 50 and up to 100 days
per year. Each part‐time vet must sign a declaration verifying their part time status and, in
the event of a claim proof of status may be sought. These are annual policies but for
specific periods of veterinary work. They can also be purchased by those vets who
undertake veterinary work which is secondary to their practice role.
These part‐time options cater for members who may only provide veterinary services on
an occasional basis e.g. those in academia who undertake some weekend or holiday locums
and those on short term contracts before emigrating or undertaking a permanent role."

Re: Veterinary Surgeon insurance

Its a pity because VDS would allow you to insure on a monthly basis until this year. You can do a monthly direct debit with them so it makes it more manageable (don't tell them I told you but why not do that and just cancel it if you don't need it anymore)! My part time assistant is paying £48/month for the most basic cover.
