I know, I know what you are going to
say... It is horrible to ask you this way. How can you possibly turn it down

VAT is nothing to do with your practice. You simply collect it on behalf of the state.

PAYE is your employees' own income tax and national insurance, nothing to do with you except that you collect it.

Granted, in with PAYE is employer's contribution to NI, which is an employment tax on you. But this year at least, you are getting let off £2000 of it........ so maybe you won't pay any at all.

If you want to protest about taxes, protest about "green taxes": whopping great levies and what have you on energy, that are handed out to subsidise useless windmills. A tax on the poor to make the rich richer. Very socialist. Forced upon us by the "EU" naturally.

Re: Arlo, I demand a fiver from you

I give (generously) to animal charities, but only animal charities.

My ratonale ?

Read your Bible

The Bible tells us to give 10% of our income to the poor - but that was written pre- social security days.

Now Inland Revenue (thieves) take 3 x as much out of the practice as I do ( VAT PAYE my owm income tax)

A huge chunk of that goes to benefit the poor - schools, NHS, pensions, unemployment pay, disability pay ( my bete noir ) brat benefit, etc etc etc ( ad infinitum )

10% of my profits I consider justified. Anything over that I consider barefaced robbery- that's assuming no Vat (of course)

I give as generously as I'm able to animal charities - if Inland Revenue stopped robbing me - I'd be able to give a lot more.

I refuse (point-blank) to give a single penny to human charities until tax is reduced to a tolerable level.

On the Now Show, my ears were pricked by the UK spends an unbelievable £41 million a week on bottled water when billions in the world have no access to the clean tap water that we have. One of the joys of Foreign Cycle travel is that you pass through the places that are normally unseen, but for many many villages clean water really isn't available. We're lucky as can afford bottled water abroad but China, India, Sri Lanka, Laos etc etc are so reliant on water pumps built by charitable organisations. So maybe before cracking that case of Evian, look at http://thewaterproject.org/bottled_water and divert your money there rather than your local supermarket. Oh and I've just handed out a load of scrub suits and suture material to a vet going to the third world not to mention the charity neutering I perform every day the fee for which probably doesn't even cover my costs. I do realise that to participate in something that stretches on has to be the motivator, along with actually raising funds. It's just that I struggle with the philosophy, and feel that my personal charity works are devoted to causes that I am passionate about.

All that said, I reckon it is a great thing to do, to utilise space here to tap into the profession which I have found to be unconscionably generous in the past, way beyond expectation. It's sad that some charities and institutions must rely upon charitable donations, though it was ever thus!

These days I concentrate on encouraging others much younger and fitter to do things, though five years ago I resurrected an old comedy band, filled a theatre for three consecutive nights with music and laughter, and was able to raise over £25000 for a local hospice and a complementary therapy trust in the process. There were loads of winners - the audience who reconnected with us after 20 years, us who found our magic had not decomposed, and of course the charities.

More power to you all, and keep up the good work.

Re: Arlo, I demand a fiver from you

We did it about 4 years ago - it was brilliant fun but raising £2500 was really difficult.
