I got a friend of mine to email to Sandra at the K9 health centre, asking if the information in the article was correct and that he shouldn't have his dogs vaccinated

In fairness to Sandra , a reply came back fairly swiftly saying that she was extremely unhappy that someone had written in her column in her absence and without her consent, and she was taking legal advice about the situation. She also said that she advises vaccination wholeheartedly and has her own dogs vaccinated.

For those not familiar with NE Scotland - the P&J is more than just a local rag, it's kind of THE paper for the north of Scotland so that ad will get a fairly wide coverage(although admittedly it does have regional variations - the advert wouldn't be in the Inverness edition for example.)....[/quote]

There is a digital edition but it's subscription only and given the level if journalism in evidence - not a subscriber.

I've put a complaint in to the ASA:

This advert contains a number of dangerous, unsubstantiated and misleading falsehoods which not only will fail to prevent cancer in dogs but will mean that anyone following the advice will be depriving their pet of genuine health-care such as regular vaccination and parasite control, to their great detriment.

I'm not sure how much good it'll do though as no product as such is being advertised and no money is being asked for. This is a total nonsense message, the press at their absolute worst I'm afraid, there isn't a single, sensible piece of advice in the whole thing

What makes me even more annoyed is that there are actual vets out there who also believe in and promote this sort of claptrap.

Mark - do you have a link to the article online? I might pass this on to Allan Henness of the Nightingale Collaboration, maybe they could go after a veterinary target for a change.

If nothing else is achieved the newspaper may learn a few lessons. Do not trust the medical opinions of unqualified people. A little research and a quick phone call to any (almost!) local vet would have prevented the publication of such nonsense unless paid for by an advertiser!

The story at the moment is that it was written by a journalist at the paper while "Sandra" was away and had no knowledge of it. The whole thing just gets more rediculous.

Advertorial is a paid advert made to look like editorial, which usually carries a smallish title: ADVERTISING FEATURE

As you say, doesn't matter whether it is an advert or advertorial, either would qualify for a complaint to the ASA.

But if K9 Health Centre did NOT pay for this page. For example, they offered editorial content in return for having their contact details published, then it is neither advertising nor advertorial, just editorial, which the AS~A would not get involved with.

Despite being the other end of the country I have reported this ad to the ASA. It is dangerous nonsense.

Has anyone seen an injection site tumour in a dog?

This sort of rubbish is going to be unstoppable on the internet but placing it in a 'real' paper gives it a degree of credibility it does not deserve! It makes little difference whether it is an advert or an advertorial it is just wrong! Sadly there are plenty of numpties that will happily subscribe to all chemicals kill!

It might have a little truth in it After all, if the dog dies of parvo, leptospirosis, pyometra, lungworm etc it's not going to have time to develop cancer!

Ok I have complained to the ASA, it would be useful if anyone else had time to submit a similar complaint. The process takes about 60 seconds and you can follow Arlo's link. The only details you need are that it was published in the Aberdeen Press and Journal on the 25th January.

Because the image itself was saved landscape, and it can only upload the image as it is.

I've downloaded, rotated 90 degrees and reuploaded for you!

But back to the more important point - the advert itself. That kind of unsubstantiated rubbish makes my blood boil! Someone needs to complain to the ASA. I'd be happy to do it myself, but I wonder if it could come back on you (i.e. I've complained as a result of you posting it here).

Report the ad to the ASA - it is untrue and miss-leading. I would also copy your report to the paper.

If I follow her advice and my dog still gets cancer can I take legal action against her?

I always seem to be seeing cancer at injection sites - never. Did have I dog that was 10+ and had a haemangiosarcoma in the correct location.

Parvo kills far quicker.....
