Just wondering if anyone else had experienced this. I spayed a 7mo female cat 10 days ago today. All went fine during surgery, no complications, both ovaries fully removed. Cat did not appear to be in heat at the time. Flank spay wound is perfect

Re: Post spey complication

I would suspect that it is a tracking deep wound infection given the time span from the spay to onset of symptoms. If you are fairly sure that a heat source is not responsible and you are certain there is no wound infection, then given the mammary gland involvement, I would consider necrotising fibroadenomatous hyperplasia. As the cat has now been spayed it should hopefully self-resolve with supportive therapy but the treatment for this is aglepistone 20mg/kg s/c q 7 days.

Re: Post spey complication

Justification for turning up the heating in both op and recovery rooms, rather than relying on heat pads/hotties in a cold room.

No heat pads during surgery, animals are placed on bubble wrap on top of a vetoed. Hot water bottles used in recovery yes, sounds like a plausible reason unfortunately

Re: Post spey complication
We've had this sort of thing from both.
Forgot to mention the damage is a function of temperature times duration and [from memory, it's been on here before] even only 42C if long enough will do it.....

Often microwaveable heat pads which can continue to heat up after they have been removed from the microwave. Assuming the cat has been spayed on the left flank and this was uppermost in recovery imagine the issue is on the right side ventral flank, as if it has been propped against something hot.

Re: Post spey complication

I would almost guarantee some form of heat source during recovery, particularly if the coat was wet increasing heat transfer.
