I know from my work in implant development that the prices charged for "human" medical and surgical hardware bears absolutely no relation whatsoever to genuine supply costs. For example, the funky battery operated orthopaedic drill/saw combinations listed at £4-5,000.00 and badged with well-known European equipment suppliers logos, are in fact manufactured in China and could be sold in UK for about a quarter of that. The story with scopes and cameras is similar.

Re: Video Otoscope, adding value

I have a system similar to the Storz system but from Medit in Canada. The quality is good and the cost much reduced compared to Storz. The camera system was from Freelance and all told I probably paid about £3K in 2005. I have a rhinoscopy sheath for noses and very narrow ear canals. It has paid for itself many times.

The camera system also attaches to fibrescopes, so my bronchoscope ans gastroscope suddenly become much easier to use and recordings are possible.

Re: Video Otoscope, adding value

Hmmm, suspect it will be out of my budget, but will have a look, thanks.

Re: Video Otoscope, adding value

I don't profess to have any answers to your financial questions but I would suggest that there is massive difference in quality of the different video otoscopes and you get what you pay for. And I would say if you are going to stump up some cash then you may as well pay a bit more and get a good one. My experience with these 'plastic' models is that they tend to be a bit flimsy which is not ideal in our patients.

We use a Storz otoscope and it is brilliant, see KARL STORZ OTOSCOPE
