'Not all employers are going to understanding or even tolerant of something like this, but that is a different matter. I may consider contacting the RCVS about this, but am wary of making a rod for my own back should anything come of it in the future: ''You knew you were treading a fine line, you even contacted us about it'' that sort of thing.' The key is would PIC/DC consider your activities 'disgraceful conduct in a professional respect'? If it is not illegal and you aren't using you MRCVS status to enhance your activities, then it is not obvious how this would come into this category. You can ask for advice anonymously, and feel free to ask to talk to someone of a specific gender if that is easier. Or you can identify yourself if you prefer.

There was a Grey's Anatomy storyline about a doctor posing in fashion magazines (Katherine Heigl/Izzie Stevens) and also, come to think of it, Dr. Honey in Holby. No lawsuits involved-but a very embarrassed patient who did not want Dr. Stevens to perform his prostatectomy.

Trust me to contribute medical dramas to the discussion.

I would say that whatever one does in one's private life, providing it is not illegal, and as a VS you are not promoting or advertising yourself to the disadvantage of professional colleagues, is entirely your own business and of no concern to anyone else. I don't believe posing in the nude for photos or art is an offence in anyone's book . A trip round any art gallery suggests that depicting the nude human form is perfectly acceptable, even (or particularly) in polite society. I believe the British Museum is currently running a major exhibition of rather saucy Japanese art work.

Society's views change on these things - as recently as the late 1960s homosexual acts were a criminal offence - and presumably might have lead to a striking-off for a convicted VS. These days there are often stories in the papers about students and even professional people subsidising their incomes via prostitution - again not illegal.

This sort of quandary arises in all sorts of ways for all sorts of reasons, here's just another example:

If it is a troll post it has been a really entertaining one!

If not I suspect most vets are pretty down to earth (and some have exotic tastes!) so the profession should not be that much of a problem IMO. If the DC come knocking on your door just say the model looks very much like you and burst into tears (male or female anon!). That should get them to go away!

I subsidised a couple of years at university by fixing washing machines and copying very dubious videos to sell on (tame by internet standards!). Not sure that would have met with the DC's approval. I downloaded a couple of them some time back - it was like seeing old friends! At the time they got rather boring by the tenth copying session!

Any one else with a dark secret? Be brave let it all out! It is not an open forum after all!

I can assure you I'm not trolling, but I am trying to gauge reaction to this. I am aware that if I'm really that concerned, then I should just not do it and shut up about it. So I'm trying to work out just *how* concerned about it I should be? I know there is no absolute answer on this, but an insight into general consensus is what I was hoping to achieve.

I have had similar concerns. Not nude modelling - I would face criminal sanctions but for the last couple of years I have been performing Stand Up Comedy. I have been quite concious about subject matter and language on precisely the same concerns.

The reference to lobbying Vet Record for a Reader's Wives section led me to believe that OP was female. In the dear dark days beyond recall when magazines with Readers Wives sections were passed around school, I don't recall seeing many pictures of men.

Have you thought of actually asking the RCVS, possibly anonymously. Puts you in a lot better position if a complaint ever arises if you have checked everything was ok in the first place (would that the same applied to planning laws but that's another story!). Bear in mind anyone can complain to the RCVS about anything and they are obliged to investigate, however trivial or unjustified, but the preliminary investigations are discreet and private. My suspicion is that 100 years ago you would have been tarred and feathered, 30 years ago you would have been struck off, and today no one would care. I think even if you were on page three of the Sun as the nude vet, I don't think that would bring the profession into disrepute these days. You might also want to consider how your boss feels about it. What may not count as gross professional misconduct might still be deemed gross misconduct if it brings your practice into disrepute. My personal opinion though is that it is no body's business but yours. Would I still employ you knowing this? Yes - provided you weren't modelling in the local paper! And even then I suspect my partners might over rule me ;)

I used to have framed fetish art (inked by a former flatmate) hung in rented accommodation that was being paid for by the practice. Not sure what my bosses or landlords would have made of it if they'd ever done an inspection. Admittedly the kitten that insisted on climbing the textured wallpaper in the living room was probably more of an issue...

The same former flatmate later went out with a vet student of my acquaintance (not at the vet school I went to as an undergrad) and they went to a lot more interesting clubs than I did, so I hardly think you're on your own in all this.

Be aware that it's not always easy to keep identities completely separate. I write fiction under another name, but I've lost count of the people who've ended up knowing both.

I also have a (female) nurse with a similar alternative profession (Page 3 no less) it makes no difference to me, the clients don't know and half the men are pervy old leches over the nurses whatever they look like!
