You could ask them what they think the negative aspects of the profession are. Most we chat to worryingly have a rose-tinted view of Herriot-type work, no on call and high salary!

Professional: - why do they want to be a vet, what type of vet, do they have an understanding of the profession etc. Why veterinary and not medicine.

Personal: - strengths/weaknesses, how have they handled a difficult situation/difficult people (stressful, confrontational, grief etc.)

Topical: - badger culling, TB, PETS

What work experience they've done & what they gained from it.

I remember my vet school interview quite vividly.

They asked about fox hunting, but I suspect badger culling more topical now.

They asked about dairy experience and a few things like how many cows they had, how much milk they gave and what they were fed (I assume to check I'd actually done it).

I wasn't asked why I wanted to be a vet, but that is a good cliché.

Asked me to talk about some interesting cases I had seen seeing practice.

Talked to someone recently who was asked to name some drugs seen in vet practice and what they were used for.
