Thanks everybody, I agree so far the best bet looks like a variant of a scarlet chested parrot. I'll get in touch with the local parrot society today.

Take a google at some turquoisine parrots and also scarlet chested parrots. Apparently there are colour varieties of these and someone (on a bird forum I use) suggested it looks like a cinnamon pied mutation of the scarlet chested parrot. There are a few similar images on google images when you look.

These do look similar, although the tail looks longer in the photos, I wonder if ours is v young?

Looked at a few more red rumped parakeets like Marie had suggested - take a look here http://www.ittybittyaviary.com/redrumpparakeets.html as a lot of similarities with some of these. This looks the most promising.

Looks similar, but not quite...head seems rounder/broader on this guy, and he's smaller. I'm spending the night googling now! I looked at the lutino budgies but he doesn't look like a budgie around the beak and head. He's very cute and appealing, whatever he is!

Looks similar to a lutino parrotlet but I haven't seen one with that red pigmentation in its feathers. Worth finding the owners just to get a definite answer!!

He looks to be a bit small for a rosella, could he be a parrotlet? The photos are not the best, I'll try to get some better images later. I've attached a sort-of side view.

The cere looks too small to me for a budgie and the coloration would be unusual with pigmentation but without any barring. My guess would be a lutino monk parakeet (slightly bigger than a budgie at ~90g) but one of the cinnamon morph rosellas is also a possibility though is larger (~120g) with a longer tail . Have you got a side on view with tail?

It is not a canary, the beak is wrong, I agree more budgie like from the beak, but I think the feather colouring is wrong as I have never seen an orange/red budgie colour which this little guy seems to have. Parakeet of some sort would probably be a good start point...off to google more!
