Just give it an extended course of antibiotics at the top concentration permissable and keep it on them until the lab say it's cured. A very wise (and elderly when I was a new grad ) said to me (we were discussing urinary infections in animals) " Just remember animals are tilted through 90 degrees at the hips, and water doesn't run uphill very well - so you have a good old bacterial soup fermenting away in there."

Well, dog is home, but he is still dribbling a bit. Not all the time, which is a bit confusing- he can be really great for a day or so, then dribble lots the next day, but not consistently incontinent, if you see what I mean. We tried him on propalin, but he was being a little bugger about taking it, so I've tried him on enurace, which seems to be working better, and no side effects to date. Owner is using an incontinence belt with him too, and I'm just not sure how much could be behavioural to some extent with this little guy....her sister let slip that he always used to piddle in the house, and he seemed to refuse to pee at all (and no dribbling!) when he was with me, although laterally he wouldn't eat for me at all (of course I got all worried about his kidneys!) but then went home and has been eating like a horse! He is s strange dog!

Last C+S showed <significant amounts bateria, so I'm hoping time will help iron things out- or not. This dog is set to be the bain of my life, I think!

Re: How do people get past this? I'm not sure I would have been able to rectify the situation like you did. I did my first urethrotomy on a dog and that was tricky enough. On the subject of suture material I phoned our local referral centre for advise before doing the urethrotomy and the surgeon told me to use vicryl 6/0. I was surprised that he didn't say a monofilament but he said the size was more important and most practices are more likely to have the smaller sizes of vicryl than a monofilament, and he felt vicryl was suitable.

Re: How do people get past this? I have learnt a lot from it in many different respects. Ethics, attitude, looking for help and receiving it. I think the whole discussion could serve as a discussion and learning example for vet students in the various vet schools. I hope somebody will pick it up for that purpose. How to deal with surgical disasters. Very relieved for you, celebrate!
