Samples which are taken for serology testing from a healthy animal
may be exempt from UN3373 under IATA 3.6.2.2.3.6. This states that
“patient specimens for which there is minimal likelihood that pathogens
are present are not subject to the Regulations if the specimen is packed
in a packaging which will prevent any leakage and which is marked with
the words “Exempt human specimen” or “Exempt animal specimen” as
appropriate.”

and;

In order to avoid any difficulties the outer packaging should be clearly marked with either:

‘UN3373 Category B Infectious Material’ Or ‘Exempt animal specimen - non-hazardous’

Contact them if not a member for the full info; I think BVA have also copied this. As with so many of these legal/'H&S' things the devil is in the detail and often comes down to some over-officious person over-interpreting the rules (or some idiot deliberately flouting the rules)

We do however have a lovely HS delivery van driver who will drop off our larger samples at the local lab, who then use their internal mail service to get them to the 'right' place. I know the SAC are starting to only run tests at certain of their labs so a lot of samples posted to your nearest lab will be forwarded on anyway. I think the SAC has info on setting up a courier service and you might get a discount - can remember all the details at the moment though.

Re: sending blood samples

Our local post office refused to accept blood samples in the post and we've set up an account with TNT . They collect from the practice and you can track the package. A rep from the company visited and we did a deal so around same price of post.
