Francisco It's a totally unnecessary experiment. I'm opposed to doing it in the 1st place, for exactly the same reason I'm opposed to cosmetic testing-we don't need more cosmetics, so the research doesn't need doing. Sadly, a certain amount of research is necessary for genuine medical reasons. I suppose my attitude would be best summed up by saying I support FRAME but not BUAV

I understand the Iranians are doing research to see the effects spaceflight has on the body, so in the interests of saving the Iranian government millions of dollars and loads of time, I've taken the liberty of finding them the relevant Wikipedia article on spaceflight effects on the human body.

Just as appalled as I am about testing chemicals in animals. But... who do we test things on? Please don't say lefties

I guess the question would be.. What the h*ll are they trying to achieve?

I go with your first sentence Wynn but as said there are far greater animal welfare concerns in the world than one monkey. But as for the second, if all of mankind had that attitude we'd sill be living in caves!

I think the routine stoning of women to death is a bigger concern, but one wonders why they need to when they have a war mongering ex president who would be a better candidate !

Indeed they did - in 1957 - I remember it well. She was called Laika and was feted as a national heroine - appeared on postage stamps etc.

Sadly of course, she did not return to earth. The Russians were a bit coy about what happened to her and suggested that she died peacefully after 5 days in orbit. Some 40 years later it was revealed that in fact she died just a few hours after the launch, probably from over-heating and panic.

I'm not sure I would rate the Iranian monkey's chances of getting home in one piece to tell his mates about his trip....?

The humans CHOOSE to be astronauts. That's the difference. To be honest, I've never seen the point of manned space travel-waste of money.

How is it suffering Wynne? It's not like they grabbed a wild monkey and shoved it in a capsule. It is most likely going to be a captive-bred animal that has been trained for an extremely long time to do such a thing. It will be used to the environment of a space capsule and so stress levels are bound to be reduced, comparable to a trained astronaut.

Is sending a person up in to space totally unnecessary punishment for a sentient being?

[/quote] Didn't the Russians send a dog into space first? As Bob suggests, if that's all we had to worry about the world would be a better place. I'd exchange 1,000,000 space monkeys for world peace and sustainable global policies on climate change, protection of the environment and habitat.

There are far more appalling things going on in Iran than sending a monkey into space. I doubt they would take any notice of western views anyway.
