However I do work with an exotic vet who requires drugs for his patients and doesn't have a wholesaler account so he writes a prescription for me to supply. However the patients in question are ostensibly in the care of a mutual client who pays the bill so they are albeit sometimes rather tenuously under my care, I wonder how that scenario would fit in here.
If he writes the prescription for animals under his care you are simply dispensing meds under guidance not selling POMVs directly to him for resale. Can't see any reason the VMD would get annoyed about this - we give prescriptions out to clients readily to buy online/from pharmacies so this should be the same thing...
I feel that this could be construed as borrowing with a deposit for its return as opposed to selling as it is almost always only when we've run out of something in an emergency and/or it is out of stock at the wholesaler. Indeed we usually just give it to them and usually they replace it if they remember.

Emergency wholesale supply between authorised retailers

88. An authorised retailer of veterinary medicines may supply products which fall within

the scope of the qualification they hold to another authorised retailer, in order to

relieve a temporary, supply shortage that could be detrimental to animal welfare.

This derogation is intended to prevent animal welfare problems associated with lack

of availability of medicines and not intended to exempt wholesale dealing from the

need for a wholesale dealer’s authorisation.

Chris - last time I looked we could supply other vets to the limit of 10% of our drug turnover before a wholesaler licence was required.

Quite frequently provide drugs from neighbours and they reciprocate.
Fair enough. It says in the VMR:

13. No person may buy a veterinary medicinal product, other than by retail or for the purposes of retail supply in accordance with Schedule 3, unless the buyer has a wholesale dealer’s authorisation granted by the Secretary of State under this regulation and Schedule 3.

But I am not aware of the exemption you mention. Sorry I don't profess to be an expert, but I would suggest someone ensured was ok before buying from abroad from someone other than a registered wholesaler. Which the OP might be, I don't know! I felt a little uncomfortable with comments which implied you could buy form wherever you liked as long as it had English labelling...

I'm not convinced this would be legal even if the packaging were in English. Certainly a vet in the UK cannot sell on product as in the VMR it says one can only buy what one uses. If one wants to supply to other veterinary surgeons one must have a wholesaler licence. I presume similar rules apply in other European countries.

As for the recipient, I think again one must buy only from a licensed wholesaler, whether in the UK or elsewhere in Europe.

There IS exemption in the VMR whereby one can buy a drug from a fellow veterinary surgeon in an emergency, but clearly this is not the case here.

I would certainly request approval from the VMD before buying from another veterinary surgeon, even for UK registered product. I'm pretty sure what their answer would be.

Re: Maybe who need Metacam 20 mg/ml.

Aha! This would be perfectly legal if the label was in English

Q. How do I know if the veterinary medicine is approved for the U.K. market?

A. The medicine will be labelled with a code starting with a VM, e.g. Vm12345/4000 or have an EU code, e.g. EU/1/99/099/001-001 and be labelled in English. Some medicines may be labelled for the UK and another member state. Members of the general public may only import authorised medicines in the category AVM-GSL

Situations where veterinary medicines may be imported:

Under the Veterinary Medicines Regulations, veterinary medicinal products may only be imported into the UK under the following circumstances:

If the product holds a UK marketing authorisation and is labelled for the UK market

Re: Maybe who need Metacam 20 mg/ml.

Have you checked with the VMD?
