The header is not strictly accurate but my question is basically: how do I warn a client that I am considering referring them to the RSPCA?
I saw a geriatric dog in the summer who presented with an infected, necrotic oral tumour and systemically

Re: How to discuss welfare with a client
Any ideas how best to phrase the fact that I will contact RSPCA if I or another veterinary practice do not check this dog?
How about "if you don't bring this dog to me or another veterinary practice pretty soon I'm going to tell on you to the RSPCA, who will get you banned from keeping animals for ten years" ?

Re: How to discuss welfare with a client

I know that this might not solve your situation. But to the question: How do I tell them that I will report them to the RSPCA? My answer is that it is not necessarily me who will do it.

On a couple of occasions, I had to say: 'If we abide by the law, keeping your dog alive will be seen as cruel. Many people will think this and they can make their mind to report you for it. That could end quite badly, with a ban from keeping animals and the possibility that your dog is taken away from you to be euthanased, instead of doing in a much nicer way, being you who makes the decision'

When I have done this (correctly or not), they have gone home, talked to their family and had come back with their mind made. They thank you for it because they think that you have 'saved' them from being reported, rather than being threatened.
