I have been in the same job for the last 5 1/2 years since I qualified. I have just handed in my notice after 9 months of maternity leave.
I am trying to write my CV but have a couple of questions if anyone could give me some help!
I am

Re: Cv Questions

One bit of advice I was once given, which is to include what you brought to the previous roles, financially. So in my case, with each entry I added something along the lines of: I was responsible for bringing in new business to the value of xx during my time with yy. Not sure how that would apply to veterinary practice, but perhaps you increased sales per client, or saved the practice money.

I would have thought that a CV that demonstrates that you think about the profitability of the business and how you could help improve it, would be very compelling to a small business owner!

Good luck

Re: Cv Questions

Please tailor ur cv for the job you're applying for! We've just interviewed for new vet , all the applicants were new grads and even though the job description stated minimal horse work and a mixed but mainly large animal job several of the cvs we discounted without interview were all about all the horse work they'd done as a student. With home computers it's easy to have several cvs for different jobs. We would be happy to interview someone with a long term employment record . Again , state what cpd you have done , areas of interest etc. check what the practice does on their website and think about how you would fit in. Good luck with the job hunting

Re: Cv Questions

Thank you all very much.

a decent level of experience - the fact that you've stayed in the same job since graduation is a GOOD thing!

a good, all-round knowledge base (a few specific interests a bonus)

a couple of 'normal' hobbies (we had someone state their hobby as 'the paranormal' ) - just to show you are a rounded person

a skill set suited to the job you are applying for

If you accompany it with a friendly cover letter stating why you want THAT job, you'll get an interview. Which is, afterall, all a CV is for.

Good luck - but I suspect you won't need it and will get the first job you apply for!

A short job history isn't an issue, generally. Classically, every employer likes to know why you left your old practice (have a good answer for this) and will also want a nice breakdown of your skills. You can add a section on 'skills' to your CV and list your interests and abilities in internal medicine, surgery, or any particular interests you have. Also you'll probably want to redo your summary or personal profile, because you'll definitely have changed in 5 years.

Good luck! PM if you'd like more specific advice.

Best wishes,

I am not an employer, but I would be suspicious of someone changing their job every 6 months. To stay in the same job for 5 years shows your loyalty in my opinion. Maybe you could list any advanced CPD, e.g. practical orthopaedic surgery course or anything like that you might have done. And depending on the nature of the new job you apply for I would mention non vet activities as well, e.g. if you were a scout leader if you are applying for a team leader job or other relevant experience. Good luck with the new job!

Re: Cv Questions

For someone like yourself a longer term of continuous employment looks very strong on a CV rather than half a dozen sub 12 month placements.

What do you like about your job, can you do anything clever not all vets can. What CPD have you done. What bits of the job are you most interested in?

No need to put GCSE grades or how you spent 2 weeks at the PDSA as a 4th year.

Usually they are going to hire on personality. Will you fit in.
