I am just having a bit of a 'basking in motherly pride and reflected glory' moment and wanted to share...
My 8yo little lad Callum took part in his first triathlon on Sunday and made me so proud! He actually got out of the water in tears (it

Re: The Anglesey Sandman Triathlon

Sandman on channel 4 at 7am on Saturday , slateman 7.30 Sunday if you want to watch

Re: The Anglesey Sandman Triathlon

Tough break. People swim the 400m in 20 minutes using breast stroke, side stroke and the cane the biking and running . The slow swimmers start first with the 5 minute swimmers starting in afternoon. There is great encouragement for everyone. It was the first one I did and the other people in my wave showed me what to do, how to rack my bike and basically led me through to the start. Transition is often the mos difficult part! I will never win but I enjoy the experience. The cross training suits my nature. I would recommend it to all. I now have a swimming wetsuit (they are all differnt) and have swam in lakes throughout the summer with a great group of ladies. Great change from the stresses of practice

Re: The Anglesey Sandman Triathlon
Lousy excuse! I got beaten quite comfortably by a guy in his 60's on Sunday and he finished in the top half of the field
Indeed and if I may be so immodest as to say that at 63 there are still very few other cyclists half or even 1/3 my age who can come past me and drop me for long - indeed it hasn't happened for well over a year. But I would also observe that a lot of 'old boys' are posting better PB's in time trials even in their 70's than when they were younger because now they've retired they have time to train properly, have better sports nutrition, and have much better equipment than they could afford or was even available back in the mists of time. It is a proven fact that endurance can actually improve with age and you can still put muscle on even into your 80's, it's top end power and top speed that declines so I won't win any sprints any time soon (not that I ever could being built for climbing rather than speed) but the longer the distance the better I get. So sorry, I agree, age is no excuse.

Re: The Anglesey Sandman Triathlon

Want a bet I couldn't get left behind?

There seem to be two types of triathlete - a few are aiming to compete, win the race or qualify for the world championships. These are only the top 5% and are very focussed, incredibly fit athletes. The rest of us, the 95%, are just aiming to complete, more of a personal battle between yourself and the course (and maybe your friends & club mates). Times do matter, you always want a PB but position is less important. I do look at my position but I couldn't tell you more than roughly where I was. I can list you my times though and average speeds for every race. Anyone who completes the Snowman (or any other race) gets respect whether first or last.

You should give it a go though. The winter is duathlon season so no swimming needed but there really are loads of people who are appalling swimmers who still comp(l)ete. A lot of sprint events are only 400m pool swimming and people will do breast stroke quite happily and then power past on the bike. Pool based events are set off at intervals anyway with slower swimmers going early so it is an individual time trial. You can't really get left behind in this format.

I think that it is because serious bike racing is so very hard (certainly of all the sports I've ever tried it is the one that requires the highest level of fitness just to compete at entry level) whereas there is a much greater level of ability in triathlon and everyone seems accepted, the atmosphere seems more like a multi-participation run or charity bike ride. I'm tempted but I hate water and my swimming is so bad I'd be so far behind I'd never catch up on the bike and run sections.

Re: The Anglesey Sandman Triathlon

Will let you know how it goes.
I am working both the next weekends to make the time back for last weekend off so I will miss the Snowman (at least for this year). Looks good though. The cold water doesn't bother me too much, I am used to it in the local reservoir - anything 16oC and above and I start sweating! We started the season swimming at 8oC which is toe numbingly cold - the snowman last year was 11oC. I would think about neoprene toe covers for your bike shoes to warm your feet up a bit and the neoprene swim cap seems like a good idea.

The organisers seem to have a knack of creating difficult races each with a twist. I think the Sandman suits me best as a sea swim doesn't worry me but I am not really built to run up a big hill ! The next challenge for me is the Lancaster Half Marathon in November (that and planning next years races :-) Enjoy the race, there were plenty of gummi bears, chocolate and digestive biscuits at the end.
