Indeed, that is greatly missed. I wonder if they prefer to keep things vaguer than they used to so that they can blame the OV more easily when things go wrong?

But the passport doesn't have a date of issue on it, so without a comment that it was present before the rabies vaccine there could be problems.

"Unknown' does not certify that the dog had a chip at the time that you vaccinated it"

If I put a microchip number and sign for it, then obviously this certifies that the dog has a working microchip with that number on the date I issue the passport; I can just not sign for the day it was put in which also obviously must be before I found it. But to put "before xxxx" would be fine by me. I would hesitate to go any further investigating and then sign for the date of inplantation if it wasn't me who inplanted it.

Fill in as 'before [date we first read the chip]'

Before Defra cocked up reorganised their website you could download 'guidance notes for completion of pet passport' which told you all such useful things. Maybe email defra and get them to send a copy?

I was advised to do this by DEFRA and have had no problems. 'Unknown' does not certify that the dog had a chip at the time that you vaccinated it

One of our clients regularly took their rotti to their house in France via Portsmouth and never mentioned any problems. I've just come through the tunnel this morning and was held up in pet passport by people without a passport for dog but the original import document when brought into Italy from Hongkong the year before. The dog had 3 chips one for Asia , one for USA and one for Europe . After much discussion they were sent back into Calais to get passport?! The man in the passport office said that the vet in Calais would issue them with one as the vet in italy had signed the vaccination certificate with date of worming.Then next man had passport issued in Northern Ireland with the date of idchipping left blank. It seems that there is much confusion with the whole system

I am a bit confused by the "except Rottie" rule. Could this not also be read as "The other breeds are allowed if the have a pedigree, Rotties are never allowed, whether they have a pedigree or not"? Just to spread some (more) confusion...

btw, there are similar rules in place for Germany. Pitbulls, American Staffordshire, English Staffies!!, and Bullterrier are generally not permitted to enter the country. The only excemption is for dogs who are already resident (and licensed), returning from a holiday. There are even more breeds on the list for different counties, some counties do not allow any of these breed to become resident ( but might allow them to enter for a holiday), there are also restritions for certain breeds to be kept on the lead at all times/ within town boundaries or even wear a muzzle in public places. There is only one thing I am certain about, the german dangerous dog directive is rather complicated.

[/quote] after reading this again I would agree - rotties and rottie crosses do seem to be allowed without pedigree. Case of border control deciding otherwise? Anyone feel up to asking the French embassy?

The question that comes to mind is whether these breeds are always considered guard dogs, or only if they are used as guard dogs?

B.Other breeds classified as guard dogs (cat. 2) with a pedigree can be imported into France :

Staffordshire terrier

American Staffordshire terrier

Rottweiler- Rottweiler and any dog of the type known as the Rottweiler without a pedigree.

The dog must have undergone a behavioural assessment by an accredited person

Must have specific civil liability insurance

Must obtain a dog licence by registering the dog at the local Town Hall

So possible, but almost certainly not worth if for a holiday!

yep. Follow this link (scroll down, there is an English section) and you'll be all the wiser :-)

Other countries have the same restrictions, there are many breed you cannot take into Denmark for example.
