I guess 200/module will go some way towards compensating farmers for the cattle they lose to tb.

I assume 25 years of uneventful MAFF/DEFRA work will count for much if they can get income from vets to train to do the job they have done for decades!

(Just about to stir the pot though! A few vets could do with the essential skills bit when it comes to filling in vaccination records adequately)

I once had to send a dog to Japan and the lady (who didn't speak English very well) insisted I had to sign her Japanese papers while DEFRA kept telling me that I wasn't authorised to do so. At the end I had to stay on my own time until early hours of the morning completing export papers because owners always leave requesting papers for the last minute...

Very very worrying for the future of large animal practice. A lot are only viable because of TB work.

I know many farm or mixed practices especially in the north of the country that make a small loss on their TB work. The only reason they do it is because it gets them on farm and able to discuss other work.

From what I can see I would need 9 of these modules for my current work.

And multiply it by the number of OVs in the practice, since EHCs will still need completing when one is on holiday!

For SA veterinarians-work out how many exports you are likely to do in 5 years. Add on that fraction of £600 to every passport.

Very very worrying for the future of large animal practice. A lot are only viable because of TB work.

While it is unlikely to have any effect on actually issuing Pet passports or carrying out other export certification, since this is paid for by the owner, the current plans could have a significant impact on the costs of training.

Thye proposal http://ahvla.defra.gov.uk/documents/ov/130730-VDP-briefing.pdf indicates that veterinary surgeons will be required to take certain modules to achieve a certificate of competence before they can undertake OV work. The list of modules proposed so far are

OVQ- ES (essential skills): Principles of certification, avoidance of conflicts of interest, health and safety etc.

OVQ – TT: Tuberculin testing of cattle and other species.

OVQ – SS: Statutory surveillance activities for endemic diseases other than bovine TB, such as Brucellosis and anthrax testing.

OVQ – AW: Animal welfare on farm, at markets and in transport

OVQ – DC: Detection and control of exotic notifiable diseases (includes work in disease outbreak response

OVQ – EX: General principles of international trade and export certification, a pre-requisite for the following export (X) modules. This alone may be sufficient for certain exports for which no further training is required (e.g. insects)

OVQ – SX. Exports of companion animals including PETS and captive birds

OVQ – UX. Exports of ungulates including equidae

OVQ – GX. Exports of germplasm including supervision of AI centres

OVQ – AX (avian exports). Export of poultry including Poultry Health scheme

OVQ – PX (product exports). Export of products of animal origin including food for human consumption and animal by-products

OVQ – TP (TB plus). Advanced knowledge of bTB biology and control measures.

I can't see this having any effect on small animal vets doing passports and export certs. if anyone in my area wants to do them cheap, they can have em all - especially the next Oz/ NZ export that comes my way!
