I've just seen a 46year old tortoise today. After hibernation the owners removed a strip of shredded paper from around the right hind leg, it has left a deep cut in the leg, looks like it might be very close to the bone. The main concern

Re: Snare type wound tortoise

Re: Snare type wound tortoise

This tortoise ended up having the leg amputated and is doing well

All the way from half a ping-pong/golf/ tennis ball up to a full metal castor from a DIY shop!

I would be concerned, like you, as to why the tortoise was left so long and whether its current health and future husbandry will be good enough for recovery. Obviously bloods and full body radiographs (especially horizontal beam to check lungs) would be a very good idea first.

Good luck!
