Currently I am putting together a client information leaflet about Euthanasia and am struggling to find any advice about burial guidelines. DEFRA whom I spoke with today, suggest contacting the County Council (Essex) and in turn when I spoke

Re: Pet burial

Emily, if you are really interested you can try contacting my dad - he's a VO for AHVLA and wrote the guidelines for the most recent updates to the ABP laws.

I warn you, be prepared for an over-detailed response, he's a bit of a nerd about it (will direct you to relevant sentences paragraphs in the legislations!)

IIRC there is a blanket exemption for pet burial at home from EU Waste disposal regulations. The Environment Agency should be able to give chapter and verse, and it used to be on their website but it's not playing ball

Re: Pet burial
I do not beleive that there is any restriction on people burying their own pets in their gardens or on other land with the permission of the landowner
IIRC the wording of the exemption in England is for burial of pets at the place where they lived, but google is eluding me!

Re: Pet burial

Search the thread: Protocol for burial of pets

If you want some sensible guidelines on depths/proximity to watercourses, then maybe those that apply to pet cemeteries would be worth looking at: http://www.defra.gov.uk/ahvla-en/disease-control/abp/pet-cemeteries-england-wales/

Re: Pet burial

I totally agree with you. It will only become an issue if it is done on a third party/commercial basis. After all how can a dead cat be anymore of a health hazard to the watercourse that a dead badger or whatever rotting away un-noticed in a hedgerow. Slightly off topic I had a barney with a client whose dog died while he was on holiday and was stored in our mortuary freezer. He asked me to thaw it out before he went home and I said it would be best not to as unpleasant as a dog ice lolly may be it would not be as bad as a smelly decomposing corpse in this weather and that it would be a health risk on our premsies until he collected it. He wasn't convinced.

Re: Pet burial
What does everyone else do?
leave it to the owners. We have a lot that take pets home to bury and it is not an area I am ever asked about.

If they do something wrong off their own back it is their fault. If you advise them wrong then you may have liability.
