My point wasn't about how many people had killed one or another dictator. It was about left and right being concepts or ideas rather than governments. A lot of people that had put them in practice in the past have interpreted them in their own ways, hence causing disaster.

Re: RSPCA at it again

Arlo I was looking for a "Try to be conciliating, and tactful" smiley.
Francisco Look at the history of the 20th century.
We would have to start a full new thread to discuss this and I am sure we will agree to disagree.

But just some points about the '20th century'

The left wing were initially ideas. Unfortunately some people understood them on their own way by following Marx Manifesto where, if a revolution was necessary, the use of violence was justified. However, left wing ideas did exist before Marx wrote his manifesto.

The Russians were actually you allies that fought the Nazis too. Indeed they were the first ones to make it into Berlin. What they did there, if it was right or wrong, I don't know.

Our furthest and most extremist right wing leader in Spain was Francisco Franco (our dictator before we managed to make it into democracy). He was actually quite welcoming to the Nazis and would have shown full support to Hitler had he made it to the Pyrenees.

I can give you more examples where right wing extremist had actually killed thousands of people (like you said) because of their place of birth or the colour of their skin. I.e. Pinochet, Mussolini, Batista, etc. and of course, Franco.

Now, both wings had things to be ashamed of. But if you do read about what 'really' they stand for and which ones gives more power to voters, you'd probably agree that 'lefties' will be winning that battle. Now if you'd prefer to protect McDonalds burgers and let the market decide (as UKIP would do as it is liberal), I'm sure the little cafe of the corner won't survive for long, because at the end of the day, they both have to buy meat, but big corporates will have it easier as they have more buying power...

*sigh*

Let's just leave it to that or let's start a new thread.

In this country the police are SUPPOSED to prosecute ALL CRIME. If only!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW I was interested by your historical analysis of the origin of the terms right and left wing. I note that the evil people who executed thousands of others-not because they were criminals who deserved executing -but merely because of their birth-were the left wingers. Now why am I not the least bit surprised!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Malcolm "He who pays the piper calls the tune" Again-if only. We pay, wastes of space, and their loony leftie champagne socialist apologists call the tune. What's just about that.Although I'm broadly in favour of democracy (everything else is worse) there are occasions when I feel like turning the slogan of the American revolution"No taxation without representation" on it's head-and having " No representation without taxation"-in other words-the franchise to be restricted to taxpayers.

The real problem with this country is that from the time Mrs Thatcher lost power, until now (UKIP) we have had a choice of 3 identical loony leftie parties-which really is no choice at all-so a huge chunk of the electorate has been (effectively) disenfranchised.

I think it depends who you work for, my brother prefers working over there. He has a paid 2 week vacation break, then can take up to 15 paid days a year as "personal days". If he doesn't take all of the 15 days, the remainder is rolled over to following year and doubled; for example if he only takes 12 of the 15, the 3 become 6 in addition to next years 15, giving him 21 days. Longer unpaid sabbaticals are allowed for longer periods of travel too.

He finds the working environment more relaxed and more flexible, he works from home sometimes and goes in as when he wants really, and as long as the work is done everyone is happy. None of this UK style clock watching nonsense. There seems to be a lot less of the UK "them and us" style of management, which relies on bullying, intimidation and hammering people until they break.

My assistant vet has just asked for (and been granted) a 2 month unpaid sabbatical at the end of this year. We're not all monsters!

Re: RSPCA at it again
There are also terrible working hours in America, and vacation entitlement is pretty poor - I think 2 weeks plus public holidays and "good" workers won't even use their full allowance. The family I have over there are lucky to be working for European companies so get European holiday leave. Think I'd rather keep my 6 weeks or so off and pay a bit more tax. No point having extra money if you've no time to spend it!!

My brother met and married an American and emigrated to the US in 2004. He has never looked backed, in his words "you get to keep your own money" his salary is comparable to here, but total taxation is roughly half, and housing and fuel costs are less. He has more disposable income and a better standard of living than he ever did here.
But the pay-off is that he has to live amongst Americans. Is it really worth it?

That was my initial reaction, but where he is in Chicago the folk seem really nice and friendly rather than the stereotypical loud and crass Americans. Customer service is a whole lot better, people are actually helpful and friendly. In fact he lives in a very cosmopolitan area with many Polish and Irish folk.

My mother in her mid 70's will happily visit and find her way around Chicago on her own, but she wouldn't go alone to many UK cities.

Re: RSPCA at it again
My brother met and married an American and emigrated to the US in 2004.
With all respect to your brother, I personally would prefer to pay more taxes and make sure there is a working NHS (even if I chose to pay private health insurance on top). I agree that public services, like the NHS, don't always work well or can have poor standards sometimes, but I can't bear the thought of people not having access to public health because they can't afford it.

In my fantastic home country (sarcasm), Spain, the right wing now is about to pass a law to regulate solar panels. http://www.blogenergiasostenible.com/segundo-borrador-real-decreto-autoconsumo-vergonzoso/ It seems to be a tax to 'protect' the current electric system. Result: People are starting to get rid of their solar panels because it will work out more expensive to produce their own electricity rather than getting it from private companies... http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2013/08/14/suvivienda/1376496586.html

(I am so sorry, but I couldn't find the above links in English)

By the way, in Spain a part of the police Guardia Civil, 'SEPRONA', paid by the taxpayer is responsible for what RSPCA does in the UK.
