We have on our computer system a record under the practice name, to record things like cpd for each of us, and clinical governance, or any VN training issues that come up. These will then be raised at our next practice meeting.

We now also have a record called complaints and praise. In this we note complaints to see if we can do anything to prevent recurrence, but also note praise, of an individual or the practice. So for instance, a recent client said how lovely it was that every time he came in all the staff always smiled. Not something we would always remember as an off the cuff remark but good to mention. Generally the praise far outweighs the complaints, and most of the latter are due to billing or cost issues.

Re: nice clients

Most of our clients are really nice! The client went on to say that the dog had previously been treated at the clinic as an emergency for anal gland abscess a year or so ago but she wasn't sure if it had been treated by me or the other emergency vet (also an Australian).

Via the translator I said to the client - don't worry, all of us 'gweilo's' look alike.

The client replied - maybe, but I think you are the handsome one.

Now that's a compliment I definitely don't get every day! But I definitely prefer that type of compliment over compliments about my clinical skills or bedside manner (but if you want to give me gifts for any reason then I will graciously accept them).

I replied - you do realise that I cannot give you a discount?

Lots of my clients are lovely. I am a relatively new business, and my clients have really got behind me and recommend me widely, even to the point of asking if they can deliver leaflets!! All my business comes from word of mouth, and I don't advertise at all. I am so grateful to them, and really value my good clients. It means that the awkward ones/ numpties I am not too bothered about upsetting, as, truth be told, I don't want or need them!

I had done a cesarean on a boxer dog. They had virtually no money and I had warned them up front that it was not a good idea to breed with this specific dog. They fidnt take my advice and bred her anyway. So I was really annoyed when it turned out to be a cesarean in the end. But all went well, and a couple of days later the owner turned up with her seven year old son. She paid the rest of the bill and he gave us two very nice drawings, one of me doing the cesarean and mummy with all pups, and the other of my nurse rubbing the puppies with a towel. They had thank you written all over them and were done with great effort. They are now hanging on the wall in the consult room. Much better than any bottle of booze :-)

Re: nice clients

Last week I had a client that said to me that I was 'AMAZING' and I spent all the way from Coventry to Ilkeston with a smile on my face
