No particular suggestions but send a thank you card explaining how the money has been put to something constructive!

Even if CPD - let the owner know it has been put towards improving care of future patients. The owner will be just as thrilled to learn this as you were at receiving the gift!

Well done for whatever you did in the first place!

Or since books go out of date so quickly, contribution to (practice) membership of vetstream/webinarvet/ etc?

Guess that isn't quite the same though, putting owners name in etc.

Or you could put it to one side as a fund to treat strays? That might be nice. Next stray that comes in you won't be spending your own money XR etc and owner would get nice warm feeling inside, especially if you tell her which case it went on!

All good ideas! Their wee dog had horrible spondylosis- not sure I can think of anything associated, can you get orthopaedic beds for dogs??

I like the idea of a textbook, as being a sole vet I often refer back to books. I probably should consider dental instruments or something like that too. I had no idea people were so generous, and actually feel quite guilty about it, as I didn't manage to fix their wee guy :(

Something related to the particular dog and his condition might be nice, helping further patients in his condition? Might be nice to tell the owner. E.g. a new fangled digital stethoscope if CHF or Onco book if cancer/

The last time I got a donation like that I bought an Atlas of Ultrasonography and inscribed in the front who it was from.

I think it should be something functional too. What about some new dental instruments. Did the animal in question have any particular medical problem? If so maybe something that would help with future similar cases?

If they want to contribute to the running of your clinic, then I wouldn't get a plaque or memorial, I'd get something functional that I could tell them I'd purchased and prefarably how that was helping.

I would have no problem spending £100 on something that maybe wasn't necessary but would be nice to have.

You sound like you're into soft tissue surgery - what about something related to that? You sound much better equipped than I am, but there might be something useful you don't have related to that?

What about histopath markers so the lab can assess the margins and tell you where incomplete ones are (I just suture in pieces of suture material as markers, but think these would be nice)? e.g. http://bradleyproducts.com/

Or I've always wanted a ring-retractor, e.g. http://www.shopmedvet.com/product/the-lone-star-veterinary-retractor-system-ring-retractor-only-large/jorgensen-products-instruments

Or an instrument, even if slightly frivolous, that does a job you're used to working around? e.g. a Jaeger lid plate instead of the back of a scalpel blade holder, or a new pair of rongeurs to ease bulla osteotomy etc.

We have a bench in the garden at the back of the practice donated by a client though we are fortunate to have a lovely large garden.

Thanks, Louise, some good suggestions. Thing is, we pretty much have all the small equipment we need (now if they'd offered to buy me a digital xray set up... ) Just not sure if I should buy something they could "see", iykwim.

We have a syringe driver bought from a donation from a client/in memory of their dog. You could get some good gadgets for £100 which you can use all the time, Alphatrak glucometer, dental equipment, pulse ox? Louise
