I have seen an increasing trend in young girls on work placements that are paid nothing at all for full or nearly full time work, as it is a placement as part of a training course either for pre VN training or for some doing a BSc in veterinary nursing, being used in place of employed staff.

I suppose a good starting point would be the rate of inflation, anything less is in effect a pay cut. CPI is currently 2.7%, RPI currently 3.1%

[/quote] They've already been offered a percentage increase well over that at a time my practice income is at best static, at worst declining so effectively any increase comes directly out of my pocket. I was more interested in what basic salaries people are paying to unqualified staff rather than percentage increases. I want to pay above market rates if at all possible.
