It looks as though you have quite a few posts to reply to, but I am more than happy to talk as well. I have been in Industry for 6 years now and have not really had any regrets besides missing surgery.

Hi everyone, original Anon here.

Thank you so much for everyone who offered to help, I have been so busy at the moment that I am only now getting a chance to take up the offers of PMs. I have sent a message to everyone via the Anon account, hopefully it gets through. Thank you again for the offers of help, the more I think about an industry job the more appealing it seems at the moment, but obviously I'd like to hear the downsides as I'm sure it's not a party every day!

Having moved from North Wales to Somerset and then Suffolk, I agree it's more difficult if you can't relocate, but I wouldn't put off the right candidate from applying because they couldn't relocate. Keep trying! Plenty of field veterinary advisor type roles are very flexible on location. And as Gina said, not everyone is in the SE!

Partial agreement from over here. I started off with a field-based job so I didn't have to relocate until I was sure of the company and that I actually wanted to work at head office.

Then there are a variety of jobs that vets can do outside the traditional areas of the pharma industry, not all of them clustered in one part of the South East.

Agreed it's not easy; I sent around a few CV's myself. And I did end up moving from Dover to Huntingdon with a wife and child. Not easy, no. It was a tough move but we worked it out as a family. Depends on where the company HQ's are. Most of them are fairly central, it's true!

In large parts of the country have little chance of getting into industry. I have been trying for a number of years but the truth is unless you live in the South East jobs are very few and far between. Recruiters and companies are just not prepared to consider you. The assumption that people can relocate does not take into consideration spouses or children/family commitments.

Well, it's funny you should say that - now that i'm out of general practice I'd agree with you, but before I left practice, it did seem like a mysterious, shrouded world full of people that finished work at 4:30 and had bank holidays and Christmas off!

(admittedly I have yet to finish at 4:30!)

Sorry you feel like that, been there before, changing jobs, within practice too, will probably help! Poor support and clients you don't "gel" with can leave you really low. Sometimes any remark is taken badly, I moved on and have had no complaints since....... Good luck, whatever.
